1. Legalize the sale of beer and cigarettes to teenagers.

2. Double the price of beer to everyone with an alcohol problem or DUI convictions.

3. Make crime pay and make criminals pay their debts to society. Sell LICENSE TO KILL permits to people and rent them handguns.

4. Rent sleeping space in public parks to homeless people.

5. Sell SUCK IT UP, AMERICA! lapel pins to GOP voters.

I know you are just flinging poo, but your first idea would actually have the support of most of the people on the AH. We have always said that certain drugs, such as MJ should be legalized. By the way, I believe 18 is the minimum age for buying tobacco products.

Making criminals pay restitution to their victims is already a common part of probation requirements. ;)

The rest of the post is just silly, though.

6. Capital punishment for any crime that would otherwise carry a jail sentence of more than a year. The freed-up jail space would be used to house the homeless (of course, they would have to work in public services, such as turning giant windlasses to generate electricity, to pay their way).

The latest disability.

If you slap him silly you may be charged with abusing the disabled.

Here's some interesting findings from the study cited. They found some possible genetic links for violent and antisocial behaviors. the genes involved controlled neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine, but social factors had to be present along with the genetic anomalies:

And a certain mutation in DRD2 seemed to set off a young man if he did not have regular meals with his family.[my bolds--dr.M.]

"But if people with the same gene have a parent who has regular meals with them, then the risk is gone," Guo said.

Maybe it's all McDonalds' fault.

How can they be sure it's genetic, and not just young people copying their parents? If a boy sees his father beating his mother, he may think it's the right thing to do. If a girl sees and hears her mother verbally abusing her father, she may think it is the right thing for a woman to do. Those would not be genetic; they would be environmental, but the result would be the same.

Likewise, when parents are physical abusive to their children, the children will likely grow up to do the same. That is still environmental, not genetic.

Generally speaking, having family meals is a good idea, partly for family interaction, and for other things as well. It would obviously make for closer family ties. :)

7. Kill all the lawyers, judges, government officials.

8. Revolt completely against the current political system.

Let Them Eat Veggies!

Holly Benson, secretary of the Agency for Health Care Administration, was interviewed on WFSU last week, with reporter Margie Menzel for Florida on the Line.

When asked whether the economic downturn would create a downward spiral on people's health, Benson said she disagreed.

"Just because you're poor doesn't mean you're unhealthy; it just means you have a lot more time to go running," Benson said.

GOOD IDEA HOLLY!

I think I need to force poor people to jog and eat veggies. Th endorphins will make them feel better and meat just makes them fat.

This is on a par with Barbara Bush's comment that Hurricane Katrina was a great opportunity for poor people to get out of that dilapidated housing.

It was a poor choice of words, if she is being accurately quoted. At the same time, poor does not necessarily equate with unhealthy. A lack of money might force people to walk places rather than driving and to eat more fruit and beans and other veggies and whole grains. By no means am I saying anything good about being poor. Been there, done that, don't wanna do it again.

Oh hell, that's all too complicated. Just legalize drugs and tax the crap out of them. If revenues are insufficient make drug use mandatory.

Actually, that would probably do the trick. With federal and state excise taxes and income taxes paid by the dealers, all budgets could be easily balanced.

ROXANNE

WE had a terrific law here in Florida. It was legal to make clove cigarettes, legal to sell them, and legal to buy them...but illegal to possess them.

I say lets sell drugs to people then arrest them for possession.

My plan is pretty long, but....

1. Legalize public nudity. Seriously, what point to decency laws? To enforce some quaint and pointless idea of morality? Not with MY tax money!

2. Replace most taxes with user fees and heavy fines on white-collar crime. That would help balance the budget quickly.

3. Privatize Amtrak already. It's dead weight.

4. Impose a national oil tariff, while eliminating taxes on domestic oil. That would undo any cost increase from the tariff, while still have the benefit of boosting self-reliance in energy matters.

Hey Sev, welcome back.

Your plan needs a few mods. Legalize public nudity, but require a fee to exercise it. The fee would have a sliding scale ranging from $1/year to $10,000. A panel of judges from AH would be engaged to determine each individual's fee, based on our aesthetic judgement. This could be done electronically, and we could set up a subforum to manage it. Heavy penalties would be imposed on anyone who tried to game the system by using a "ringer" to acquire a lower assessment.

Afraid of a surplus of "ugly nudes", are we? ;)

Yeah. Where do you buy fruit, beans, and other veggies and whole grains in the inner city on $60 a month? Where do you go "running"? She's so out of touch, she probably think the poor live in Mayberry RFD and go fishin' down at the ole' fishin' hole.

She's like Bush I who had no idea what the price of a loaf of bread was, or what a price scanner looked like. "Why don't these poor people just get jobs so they stop being poor???"
