The last grandparent.
I ordered flowers through Interflora, to be picked up next Wed morning for the funeral.
Do you know how expensive it is to send flowers from Australia to Vienna?
Still - it's cheaper than flying all that way (couldn't get a flight that would get me there in time either :()

I'm sad, but it was not unexpected. She'd been bed-ridden for a year.
She would not have liked that... my Omi was a whirlwind. Never stopped moving and worked right up till the day she fell and broke her hip.

I hope I've got her genes. She was 99.

My sympathies for your loss. 99 was a long life. I hope it was filled with a lot more joy than sorrow, and that you follow her lead with a long, active life.

RIP, Omi Queen. WQ, I'm really sorry to hear it. I've had my share of losses this past year and I know how it aches. Be well.

She had much sorrow - went into Aushwitz with 9 children. Came out at liberation with 2 surviving children. My Opa also made it, but the war took it's toll and despite having another 8 children, they eventually divorced.
They lived together in the farmhouse (which they divided down the middle with a wall) for the next 50 years, until Opa passed away.
She farmed the land all that time with him basically just a tenant.
Omi then moved to Vienna (one of my Uncles now has the farm), but she continued to go back to the farmhouse every summer until she broke her hip in 2010.
She also regularly visited us here in Australia... the last time was in 2003.

She trully was the matriarch of this family.

The last time Omi came to Australia in 2003, I organised a professional photographer to come and take pics of all 4 generations of women together.
Omi, my Mum, myself and my daughter.
It's a special picture that my Omi apparently had right beside her bed.
And my Uncle Herbert told me she wants to be buried with it.
So that's nice.

Let me guess, she died of cancer.

Let me guess, she died of cancer.

No, she didn't. She died of old age.
For the last 5 months, she's been unable to eat more than 5 to 10 grams of food each meal - the doc said her stomach/digestive system was just shutting down.
She chose not to be hospitalised or dripfed, so basically she just wasted away.

Added: none of the members of my family have died of cancer, or even contracted cancer.
Suicide, homicide, war, car accident, industrial accident and old age. But not cancer.
I am the only one to have had a cancer scare.

Sympathies, and all that stuff, but, I was thinking...In these days of the internet, or even the telephone, why does it have to be expensive to send flowers to someone in a different country?

It should be cheaper, but isn't.
A mid-range wreath is setting me back $280. Delivery would have been extra, but luckily my Uncle has said he'll pick it up for me.

That's exploitation - or are flowers just incredibly expensive in Vienna?

MY lil boy has only one OMI in the world and she is so precious- I'm sorry for your loss :rose::rose::rose:
May she rest in peace

You have wonderful memories of someone who was clearly a great person. You are so lucky. Think of her with joy.
