Officials think that Zachariah Smith was so engrossed in sending a text message Monday that he didn't notice a train - until it hit him as he crossed tracks in Elmwood Place.

Smith, 18, was on Township Avenue about 10 a.m. Monday waiting to cross the tracks. The gates were down to allow a CSX train to continue its southbound route.

When that train passed, Smith, apparently too intent on texting, was hit by a northbound Norfolk Southern train that he didn't see coming from the other direction. He was thrown about 50 feet.

He should have stuck to texting while driving, like most teenagers today.

I can't believe how oblivious people are. Here I am keeping an eye on every corner, and every bush searching out non-existant assailants, and these kids can't even avoid a train...

I disagree. We urgently need to cull the gene pool a bit. A strike was made that will improve the breed.

To that end, it is regretfully reported that Mr. Smith survived the accident with cojones intact and will, in all probability, continue to be a member of the gene pool.

The dumb-ass survived. Does this somehow prove that the survivability of a human is inversly proprotional to his Stupidity Level?

But will he ever text message again? That's the real question. I see a movie in this...the trauma while text messaging, his phobia of it from then on...then, one day, in a dire emergency, he'll need to text message once again...will he be able to do it? "No, no!" he'll say, trying to give the cellphone into other hands, "I can't--" But, "You've got to!" the girl will say, "Only you have the intense concentration needed to send out this message!"

I'll thank you guys for the inspiration when I get my Oscar for the screenplay.... :D
