My name is Otto, and I'm a cynic.

I will own up to it, having realized it some time ago, that I mistrust everyone's motives and believe no one is pure in any sense. Hypocrisy is the human condition, plain and simple. That extends to religion, politics, etc. Anything else, as a philosophy, is extremely naive. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't have principles. I do. I just accept that people are prone to be blind to what Jesus called the "beam in your own eye". Everyone is more concerned with the speck in his brother's eye.

Yes, I'm a cynic, but that doesn't make me a bad person. It just makes me a realist.

Realism and Cynicism are two different philosophical positions.

Cynicism doesnt make you vigilant and paranoid. You accept folks for what they are, which isnt much. Much of the time people are amusing, and when theyre competent or honorable or noble youre delighted.

I think most of the time people are honorable. I think three quarters of them competent. I don't see how a person is surprised when someone is caring, good, and altruistic. It happens everyday, in every country, with millions upon millions of people. It happens much more often than the opposite. :D

I don't know whether I'd agree that most of the time people are honorable, but even if I did, I think what happens is ass-wipes congregate, someone gets the short end of the stick and their world view becomes jaded. Could happen in High School, at work...point is it happens.

Some people hang on to a sunny exterior no matter what. Many more get tough skinned and cautious.

I conclude you lead a sheltered life or are the sort of person I harpoon in my comments. The Major Frank Burns of the world.

I'll go for skeptic. Cynic doesn't cut it for me. I see more grief and evil than most in the classroom I teach but they are exceptions. Most of the time I see hope and people doing the best they can with what they have. That's all I ask for. But I know better than to expect it. ;)

I don't think sheltered is the right word. I just think everyone everyday benefits from multitudes of kindness, even if they're not aware of it. I believe it's counter-intuitive, but I think it takes greater observational powers to be an optimist than a pessimist.

An optimist is one who makes the best of it when he gets the worst of it.

Or should one divert the worst, away from the next optimist?

Gotta love the ALTS. A few folks give themselves away pretty fast....no brains.

Actually, Otto is a very intelligent fellow. Not surprising for a man who has apparently seen a lot more of the real world than most of us.
