"While only a fringe element has seized upon violence as their solution, many of the world's 1.2 billion Muslim people are understandably aggrieved by double standards. The U.S. claims that it must impose economic sanctions on certain countries that violate human rights and/or harbor weapons of mass destruction. Yet the U.S. largely ignores Muslim victims of human rights violations in Palestine, Bosnia, Kosovo, Kashmir and Chechnya.
What's more, while the U.S. economy is propped up by weapon sales to countries around the globe and
particularly in the Middle East, the U.S. insists on economic sanctions to prevent weapon development in Libya, Sudan, Iran and Iraq. In Iraq, the crippling economic sanctions cost the lives of 5,000 children, under age five, every month. Over one million Iraqis have died as a direct result of over a decade of sanctions. Finally, the U.S. pro-Israel policy unfairly puts higher demands on Palestinians to renounce violence than on Israelis to halt new settlements and adhere to U.N. resolutions calling for an Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian lands."

This is taken from the link that lavy posted...is this true?

I think we need a little balance here. This material was taken from what most folks would call a liberal source; I think lavender will admit that.

I don't see where the U.S. has largely ignored the human rights of muslims. As I remember it, when we moved in to try and stop the killing in Bosnia, our sympathies went mostly to the Muslim population there. We actually went to war in Kosovo later and stopped the killing of more muslims.

We went in to Somalia and tried to feed more Muslims.

Isreal has been our historic ally, the only democracy in the the middle-east, and a people that have been oppressed throughout their entire history. Are we supposed to turn our back on them and have them give up their land to people that terrorize them and are led by a man that has a history of being a terrorist?

We have chastized the Isrealis many times for their treatment of the Palestinians, and the last administration was VERY pro-Palestinian. I think it is naiive to simply say that all the problems of the Palestinians are due to their treatment by the Isrealis. It is an intractable situation where you have two groups of people that think they are entitled by virtue of their religion and ancestry to the same tiny plot of ground. I am not saying the Isrealis are saints, but they are in a very precarious situation. In their entire history they have known nothing but hatred and attack by their neighbors. They do not deserve all the blame that they get.

As for Chechnya, we have done just about everything we can do, short of going to war with the Russians. Do you really want to go to war with the Russians?

The reason children are dying in Iraq and other countries is because these countries are ruled by despots that care more about retaining their own personal power than they do for their own people. Saddam Hussein could feed every child in Iraq tommorrow if he chose to. Rather, what he chooses is to try and build weapons of mass destruction and more palaces for himself.

I guess fifty isn't enough for one asshole.

Yes it is a liberal source. But it also shows the way they perceive things. Even if it's not accurate.

I don't think we should change our policy because somebody else perceives us as capitalist imperialist criminals. Sometimes we makes policy mistakes that we don't see as mistakes until farther down the road. Saddam is the perfect example. But all we can do is try to make the best decision based on the facts at the time and by trying to look as far a head as possible.

One of the problems with dealing with Islamic states is that they view everything through the lens of religion. I am not knocking Islam here, but when everything is viewed as a holy war, and when you use religion as an excuse to blow up buildings, I think you are operating from a severely warped perspective.

The truth is that if the U.S. was wiped off the face of the earth tommorrow, these people's lives wouldn't change one whit, and the terrorists would simply find another target to focus their anger on.

The shame of it is that a handful of terrorists are hi-jacking an entire religion for their own evil purposes. And then innocent followers of Islam begin to look up to these people because they believe that terrorism is the only vehicle they have to gain power.

Applied Behavior Analysis. I can't help but think of numerous ways to apply the principles elsewhere though.

Positive and negative reinforcers has a whole new meaning.

I don't think they are fighting against a religion per se. From what I know of Bin Laden, his main gripe is that the U.S. promotes evil in the world. According to him, and the people that follow him, we are infidels that promote pornography and greed, and we are the representatives of western society, which, since it does not live by Islamic principles, is the cause of the evil in the world.

Bin Laden became a hero during the Afghani war with the Soviet Union, which was thought of as a holy war by the Afghanis.

As I said before, I don't think most Muslims believe this, and he and his band of thugs are using Islam as an excuse for the acts they commit. I am not the person to be asking about the tenets of Islam, or how Osama Bin Laden's mind works.

All I know is that there is no reason in the world that justifies killing 5000+ innocent people.

Bratcat - what you want isn't possible. And as freedom loving people of any country I think we all need to take the time to understand all the issues.

I'm sorry if you don't have the patience to read long posts and articles. I think you have to. There is no simple explaination - and if you want to think for yourself - to understand things - to make educated judgements and have sound opinions you HAVE TO invest some time...

You have to... you owe it to yourself and to others...

That's all there is to it.

I wish it was as simple as to say... we're the good guys, they're the bad guys... we wear the white hats... it isn't - it never was... it never will be.

I'm sorry. Its a complicated world.

Educating yourself is one of the foundations of freedom. It is not a "cost" of freedom - be glad to your core that you can - that you can read all sides of the issues - that the information is available to you.

Excercise your freedom.
