My Name is August West....

Well, he isn't a kitten but a young male. And he's at least twice the size of my last cat.

And keeping in tradition I have selected a name for him that has origins from the Grateful Dead.

Introducing

August West

I used to have a very similar cat. I miss Pumpkin so much. I hope you have many fulfilling years with this one, and that he brings you nothing but happiness and rodents ;)

What a handsome cat, Misty.

I'm sure he'll bring you a lot of joy. And comedy. ;)

Okay. August almost died this morning.

He was insisting that I pet his belly and I was. He then grabbed my hand with both paws and claws and began kicking with his rear feet.

I told him NO! and he then proceeding to bite and dig his claws in me.

I yelled No Biting! And tried to pull my hand away, when He pulled it back and sunk his teeth in.

I then grabbed his head with my free hand and pulled him off of my hand and wrist. While holding him there I yelled at him and then released him and proceeded to clean and disinfect the wounds.

He has been a complete love since I got him. And even more so after the incident.

I think he was attempting to play and got carried away.

If he does that again, I told him he's going to the nearest animal shelter, and I don't care if it is a no kill shelter or not.

He sitting next to me like nothing happened.

He really is a sweetheart. Just don't know what to think of it.

Play behavior is exactly what this was. He was insisting that you pet his belly because he wanted to play, but got carried away. You have to be careful with cats that you never encourage them to play with your fingers and toes. The next time he wants to play like this, use a large stuffed toy so that his claws sink into something besides you. Cat toys on fishing poles are also good for interactive playing that doesn't involve your fingers. If he does grab your hand again, hold it perfectly still and give a high pitched squeal. When cats play, that's the signal that the play has gotten too rough. They almost universally hate having their bellies pet; I think they feel especially vulnerable there. It's sort of a contradiction. They show they bellies as a sign of trust and play invitation, but that doesn't mean they want your hand there.

It certainly doesn't sound like he was trying to be aggressive. I hope he didn't hurt you too badly.

Oh, this isn't my first cat. I'm pretty familiar with feline behavior. He does insist on getting his belly rubbed...constantly. And I've been using Cc"s (my last cat) favorite toy to play with him. Seems he has fallen in love with it too.

I'm pretty sure it was just him attempting to play that got out of hand.

Plus I need to be especially aware because he is the first male cat I have had in more than 30 years.

He's such a sweetheart. But if he bites agsin, he'll be gone. And I think he is aware of this.

The scratches I'm not to worried about, it's the puncture wound on my wrist that concerns me. I'll be watching it closely over the next 12 to 36 hours.

Ummm, Misty... have you discussed his getting neutered near him? I would imagine in his mind a few scratches don't equal having his balls cut off!
