We celebrated my mother's 82nd birthday. She weighs 82 pounds. Two weeks ago today, she had her fourth pacemaker replacement. This morning at breakfast, a member of the staff at her retirement home got Mom to dance 'the Bump.'
I can't help thinking of all the times I've thought I'd never hear her laugh again: the awful aftermaths of her heart surgeries, the bouts with congestive heart failure, the losses of a husband, a sister, her independence, her home.
She laughed a lot today. She basked in the attention of family and friends and a man who adores her.
It's been a rough few weeks since I left the Decaying Jungle Compound. But this tiny little woman's birthday has reminded me how lucky I am. So lucky.
