When I got home today from my flight to the midwest, my kids were already in school. I had asked them to write out a list while I was gone and tell me what they wanted for Christmas. First you have to understand that my kids are 13 and 14, you know , the obnoxious teenagers. Although I did find some of what I thought I would on their list, at the top of both of them, they wanted me to take half of what I was going to spend on each of them, pick a teenagers name off an angel tree, ( for those who don't know, they are the orphanse), and let them buy those kids Christmas. Just when I start letting the hustle and bustle of the season get to me with deadlines, sales figures, etc., it's nice to see that for one, I've taught my kids an important lesson, to give to those who may otherwise do without, and lastly, to realize that they're not always into "me". God, they' ve made me proud. Now I'll have to spend even more money and get them what they want, but it'll well be worth it.

Way to go!! There were a couple years that I had to go to the foodshelf and apply for food and clothes and gifts for my daughter. I know I appreciated the generosity of the people that took their time and money out to see that children in need got a nice Christmas. That is why I buy for charity every year now. My daughter and I do it together, she picks the gifts and deposits them in the bin. It is a lot of fun, and she's learning a valuable lesson.

Kids are amazing, they can be so generous. The youth group my son was in adopts angels every year. Last year, my niece & sister adopted a girl angel. I was with them, so I provided the toys. This year, my fiancee & I will adopt a boy, I think Justin would like us to do that. He loved shopping for the kids & always helped the Scouts with Toys for Tots. I have 2 big boxes of dolls we are giving Toys for Tots this year. The funeral home who did our arrangements does a teddy bear drive to benefit the police department. Last year, we donated 17, this year we already have taken them 18 bears. The bears are kept in the police cars & the officers give them to children at car accidents, domestic violence calls, etc.

*Sigh*

Sorta gives me hope that the world isn't always such a bad place :) My kids love adopting an "angel" every year and each year they take homemade cakes and cookies and candies to our neighbors.
I think most parents are teaching their kids this kind of thing. Wish we could hear about it more often. Thanks everyone :)

Evidently there are some of us who can remember to take the time to stop, look and listen to our children. Sometimes it takes the eyes of a child to make us realize what is really important in the world.

To teresa....I haven't been on the board long, but from your post, I take it you have suffered a loss, but it's never too late to say my heart goes out to you. That may be inappropriate of me, but your post touched me.

To everyone else and you too teresa....Good job with your children.

There is hope for this world after all.
