and I love it!!! I finally feel like maybe my stories are worth reading...there's a glimmer of hope.

:)
I've had 3 green 'E's out of eight stories,
oddly its the ones I don't think will appeal
that get them, but feedback of anykind is always nice.

I still strive for that mystical E & H combo...

In the meantime. 27 votes for my last story in one day,
averaging 4.30, but not message of feedback at all. I like to hear what people liked in the story or what they disliked....

Cactiphile hears the sound of silence...

Amish Delight: Dleightful, but not Amish

Thou hast forgotten the defining characteristic of the Amish (and Mennonnite) people -- The use of second person singular in their speach.

Jakob impressed me as more of a baptist fundamentalist than Amish because of the lack of dialect in his speech.

Other than that little flaw, well done!

I live among the Amish and Mennonites, and NOT all of them talk the same. You'd be surprised. Actually there are a lot of hidden surprises with them.

So I take offense (tiny as it is) to you thinking it's a flaw. I wrote this one with a certain Amish man in mind.

Thanks for taking the time to read it and comment! That is always appreciated.

Actually, I do know that fewer and fewer of the Amish and Mennonites use the Biblical English. I even know that some of them drive cars and live in the city.

My point was that to those who know the Amish only through Hollywood's depiction of them in movies like "The Angel and the Bad man" and "the Witness" identify the Amish and Mennonites with that speech pattern. To the uniformed, the language defines the character as Amish instead of Baptist, or one of the Extreme Orthodox Jewish sects that also cling to "old-fashioned" traditions.

Sometimes it is useful to bow to stereotypes to define a character quickly. If all of your characters speak "BBC English" then all of your characters seem one-dimensional talking heads with nothing to distinguish them from the crowd.

Point taken WH. You won't like him any better in Chapter Two then. <sigh>

I never said I didn't like him, just that he wasn't distinctively Amish. I'm looking forward to chapter two.
