As if her hearing problems and size weren't enough to be teased at school for..

now she gets glasses.

Actually, I've noticed a lot of kids wearing glasses at her school. Is this a new "fad"? I seen the other day at WalMart that you can buy "fake" glasses.

Maybe it won't be so bad after all.

My son recently got glasses. The kids who don't wear them think they are supa cool. I think it may well be a new fad, a friend of mine's daughter just "faked" her eye exam to get a pair.

Perhaps not really a new fad, I remember around 2nd - 4th grade, it was cool to wear glasses. Think this is the time they really notice when children have need of them.

while i am sorry your daughter has these problems. I don't think the glasses sigma really is such a problem...*hug*

I was a fat girl, pimples by age 8, braces @ 12, and glasses @ 16...and i turned out just fine...haha!

when I was in high school I was fat, brainy, nerdy, had a nerdy older brother, a dad who taught half of the kids I went to school with, and glasses. Thank GOD I'd had my braces removed right before high school started.

Just popping in to say hello to the freaky one. Haven't talked to ya in a while.

Hi Eumenides

I was in semi retirement. Nice of you to come say hello. :)

I think glasses are a fashion accesory now. In fact almost everything that was super nerdy when I was a kid is now cool. Thank alternative whine rock.

She picked out some purple wire frames...

I'm so sick of the color purple.

Coat, backpack, shoes, most shirts, underwear and now her glasses.

If she's this fashion conscience at 7.. what is she going to be like as a teenager?

I read in a magazine that they are having kids as young as 8 being fitter for contacts. They have them that last for a month at a time.

I read that they can help with the vision by helping to "shape" the eye of a child.

COuld be a crock, but worth asking about.

She is getting a low grade reading glass. She has some eye strain... and they decided to try this to see if helps with her headaches she gets from reading, watching tv, playing video games and working on the computer.

They aren't corrective glasses.. so contacts are out. Even if she was eligable for them.. that is one thing I'd say no to. Way to many potential problems.

My son is having his eyes and hearing checked at school tomroow and he is so scared hes going to have to wear glasses. He doesnt want to go to school tomorrow.
Ive tried to show him what it would be like to not be able to see and to just see blackness and explain to him that if he doesnt get his eyes checked he may see nothing someday.

Ive let him know that wearing glasses isnt a bad thing( Mom here wears contacts), but of course he is worried that the other kids will make fun of him.

Hes only 6 yrs old and hes starting to gain a little weight( has a little belly) and nothing fits him anymore. His feet are out growing his body and now hes worried hes going to have to wear glasses.

He is worried about his hair not looking cool enough, etc.....
When did being a 6 yr old become so hard?

I agree with you freaky, if they are this way at a young age what are they going to be like when they are teenagers???? He thinks he has a girlfriend !!!!!!!!

Why would you wear glasses when you don't have to?! That's insane.

Is this question directed towards me? Because even though Kimber doesn't need glasses.. the eye dr is attempting her from needing them on a full time basis later. It's a preventive care type of thing.

She strains when she watches tv, reads, writes and plays on the computer. But it's not because she can't see.. it's just a habit that has started and can't be broken. This is causing her to have headaches.. and not want to do her homework and read.

So basicly what the eye dr is doing is.. controlling a habit before it causes problems.

Does that make any sense at all? LOL

Don't worry if the kids need glasses and braces. I needed them and I turned out fine. Man, I could just kill someone right now and eat their innards. Though it was never cool to wear glasses when I was growing up. Still isn't.

It wasn't picked up till I was 9 I needed glasses. I was a little shy at first but if I got teased I used to say they were capable of x ray vision. lol Big imagination, from young I learnt to use my sense of humour. I didn't have a prob after that.
Bra at 11, braces at 12, freckles, glasses I turned out ok. :)

:rose: for freaky and her daughter's new glasses.

When I got glasses (I was 12) I fully expected to get a ration of SH-- from the guys. While a couple of a-h's did say something, they were the guys giving me sh-- anyway so it was no big deal. The rest of the guys were just glad I could see, especially the kids on my baseball team. I went from warming the bench to hitting clean up.

I think you are correct and glasses have become a fashion statement. My 13 year old keeps hoping she's going to need them.

Finally, while I wear contacts in my private life, I wear my glasses to work as they tend to give me a more, 'professional' look. I'm in corporate training and that intellectual look thing does help people pay attention to you.

My daughter got her glasses at age 4 (she was poked in the eye with a stick and almost lost her eye).:(

She's the only one in her class that wears them, and some of the kisd can tease. But her teacher wears them also, so she thinks it's pretty cool.

It's great that the dr. is taking the preventative measures now....it can only do good

My son got them at the beginning of school last year

at the age of 8. He thought it was cool - made him look smarter.

When we saw that he kept up with them all year - didn't play with them too much - and knew how to take care of them we decided to get him the good flex-frame ones this year - even got the kind that tint outside - he plays baseball in fall and spring. Well those $400 unbreakable glasses will break when they play football at recess or so we learned yesterday!!! Broke the arm on them - nice clean break right behind the screw. Luckily they are still under warranty and will only cost us $15 to get them fixed! So the moral of the story is - either have the warranty in place, or don't buy the real expensive ones!!!

I bought 2 pairs of glasses for her..

I thought it would be better to go cheaper and have a back up set. Just incase something happened to the first pair.

I'm going to see how she does with them and see about getting her a more expensive (nicer) pair.

Luckily we still have last year's pair - and his prescription didn't change much this year. So he's wearing those til the new ones are fixed - takes about a week for them to get the new arm in!

I always had two pair when I wore them. So thankful for that lasik surgery 3 years ago. I've already promised the boy that he can have the surgery when he's old enough - I think you have to be 18 or 21 to have it.
