My car was broken into

Why does this always happen to me? This is the third time in four years. I swear that someone knows the exact amount of money I have in my back account, and so they break into my car so that I have to spend my savings to fix it. Do people actually think about that when they break into someone else's home or car? I wish they'd think that maybe I'd have to limit my grocery funds to $50 a month now, that I can't save up enough money for summer school, that it makes it a bitch to try and get to work without a car, or that I'll have to postpone getting a painful cavity filled! Crimeny, it was just parked across the street from where I live, and I don't live in a questionable neighborhood. What the fuck is wrong with people?

Ugh, I'm sorry. This has happened to me about 5 times and it feels more and more invasive each time.

As far as the neighborhood...you have to figure if you're going to rob someone, are you going to go to a questionable neighborhood or somewhere you have odds of getting some money?

Won't your car insurance cover any of this?

Sorry for you, Myst. The last time it happened to me, they stole sunglasses. That was frustrating--the cost of replacing the broken window for a $5.00 pair of glasses.

I park my car in the driveway on the side of my house. I have a very attentive dog who barks (loudly) at the sound of someone approaching the house. I keep very erratic hours. Still...

In the past year someone has stealthily crept up to the passenger door in the dead of night and broken into my car at least 6 times. They've taken cough syrup, toilet paper, change, CD's...the weirdest stuff! It's gotten so I can't keep anything in my car at all. I thought about poisoning a second bottle of cough syrup and making the bastard deathly ill, but my conscious stopped me at the last minute.

Does antifreeze do the same thing to humans as it does to dogs?

Sorry Myst! I had some idiot smash out my side window and steal my radar detector. The jerk left the cord still plugged in to the cigarette lighter.

The Mall security guy, told me I shouldn't have an expensive car like that, it attracts thieves.

Geeesssuss!

I try to tell myself that if someone's stealing those things then they really must need them.

It's still not okay, but can help try to make sense of it.

Yep, antifreeze will do exactly the same thing to humans as it does to dogs.

Yeah Alex, when they took the toilet paper (I had indulged in a rare 12-pack...and left it in the car overnight because I had too much to carry inside) I thought they must be pretty damned desperate. The cough syrup was a prescription with codiene, so I knew they were looking for some cheap high. They never stole anything of real value even though I have a good stereo system installed and they never figured out how to open my glove compartment, so I am counting my blessings.

And doc? thanks for the info ;)

Thieving sux

They still haven't caught the bastard that got me a couple of weeks ago.

It sucks. I am sorry to hear you got "it" too.

riff

I went down to our local Irish pub and had a few beers. Everything is starting to look better now. :) Only $132 to fix that damned window, and it's 18 degrees out.

I know how you feel . . . alot

My previous car was always being broken into, just for kicks. When they were'nt stealing, the person would key the car, or smash the glass; inconviencing me and running me into debt.

Like plasticman33, the authorities asked me why I drove that type of vehicle in that area, like that was the point. I was so p.o. After a while, they caught the kid, but nothing much happened after that. Unfortunately, car theft is not a big deal in alot of people's minds, until it happens to them.

Sorry to hear that it happed to you, but stay sane (cause any type of car trouble can drive you mad!).

Myst,
I'm so sorry this has happened to you.

I don't understand people. I can't comprehend the need to steal.

I hope things get better, soon.

Shifting the blame to the victim bites! It's the same logic that blames the rape victim for wearing a provocatively short skirt.

No one deserves to be taken advantage of.

I'm so sorry that all of this is happening. How are you going to live on $50 worth of groceries hon?
I don't have much money because I just moved but maybe I could find a way to help you.
Dusty

We know how you feel.

Our "Burbasaurus" was stolen two weeks ago.

The boyfriend was going to go hunting that morning and called at 5:30am to tell me that someone had stolen the suburban. I couldn't believe that anyone would steal the old beast. After all, we call it the Burbasaurus for a reason.

Two nights later, we got a call from some old guy living on the north side, telling us it was dumped in his vacant lot.

I had 3 window A/C units in the back of it along with all my tools, we had just finished moving my stuff from the apartment to his house and we had been lazy about unloading it.

To our surprise, the bastards only stole the cd stereo out of it. They left the rest of the stuff including about 2 dozen CDs. The damage of the broken column, window and stereo are over $1000.

Why can't we find a way to rid our society of these lazy bastards who do nothing to make a living other than rob and steal from the rest of us who work our butts off to earn the things we want?

The police here in St. Louis didn't even bother to come out and take the report, instead, they called us back about 2 hours later and took it over the phone. When we called them to tell them where the vehicle was and that we were on our way there, they called back and left a message telling us THEY had recovered our vehicle.

It sucks being broke into but the only bad thing is if you do something kile that and there kidneys shut down or you hurt them.........Yes you can be sued and go to jail for it..........Now that sucks.....

I feel for you.

Now that's interesting, Wizard. The idea honestly only occured to me when I was brainstorming on how to stop the madness, I would not have actually acted on such an impulse, but for the sake of argument....

Someone breaks into your car and steals an old cough syrup bottle filled with a toxic substance. They go home and glug it down. They get sick. Very sick. They call the doctor. Do they admit the theft in an attempt to sue? And if they do how is it my fault? Am I not allowed to carry legal substances like antifreeze in emergency vials in my own car? How was I to know someone would break in and steal it? Just how does the intent to do bodily harm lie with me?

Do I need to reassure anyone here that I would not murder a stranger over a few rolls of toilet paper or some cough syrup? I just have some creatively morbid revenge fantasies.

Myst, sorry to hear of your car being broken into. I used to own an old beat up pick-up truck with a mediocre stereo - got broken into once and stolen another time. (cops recovered the truck before I knew it was gone) Sucked big time. And you do feel violated.

Blushing Rose, frankly, I like the idea of antifreeze in cough syrup. Got a giggle out of it anyways!

Thats a pretty fine line .....you make some good points and maybe some of the Lit. lawyers can help us out on this..........

I know If I rig up a shot gun to the door of my house and someone breaks in and gets shot it is my fault........When I was younger I lived in an area where they had tons of stray cats.........( I know I am going out on a limb here) ....I had a black cutlass and loved that car...these cats would walk around on the roof with dirty muddy paws then slid doen the windsheild and walk all over my hood.......I called the animal control and ask if I could kill them ...well I didn't and they told me no way ...I could trap them and they would take them but don't even try to kill them I could go to jail for it....
I had thought about a bowl of milk and an two bare wires.......Put the bowl on some chicken wire......drop a wire on the chicken wire and then one in the bowl..........Here kitty kitty they step on the ckicken wire to drink from the bowl and as they do.........Zap........one less cat to bother my stuff......

So anyhow I never did it before I get flamed about it....It wasn't worth going to jail over......

I know if someone breaks into your house and they are not threatening your life you have to let them rob you and let them go.........Or at least thats what the law says.........

*Booting post up * cause I didn't want to be the one to kill the thread with my comments....................

Blushing Rose is making me laugh far too much for my own good. What a little Devil's Advocate! Well, it's not a nice looking car. The ski rack probably costs more than the car. It's a 1987 Nissan Sentra! It makes weird sounds when I push on the gas, and the throttle is fucked up. But, ah... it has memories. To those who offered to help: your consideration and kindness has been taken deep into my heart. Thank you! Don't worry, I'm sure I'll be just fine. I've got my one true love, and that's all I need, right? Besides, I need to lose a few pounds, I hate the dentist, and summer school can wait.
