My Bloody Valentine

Way to make one feel old and cold on the same day.

Ooooh I love them. :)

There's also a song by Green Day that makes me think of them. It's new "Angel Blue" or something like that where he asks "Won't you be my bloody valentine?"

Ok. I'm done.

According to what I read on the beeb, it's all brand new stuff.

I guess Kevin Shields finally grew up and was able to leave his precious reputation as a mad genuis behind. The UK music press built him up so much that he feared a backlash if whatever came after Loveless wasn't the greatest album in all rock history.

To be fair, topping Loveless would be hard work. It's a fantastic album.

Agreed, but it's pathetic when an artist puts "going out on a high note" above creation of work. Van Morrison didn't grind to a screeching halt with Astral Weeks.

I suppose that was Richard Ashcroft's rationale for dissolving The Verve after one of the greatest debut albums of all time.

Who are you to tell the artist when enough is enough? Does the artist tell you when the iron is right?

The verve shall not be mentioned in the same breath as the mighty MBV.

I rely on my judgement of character. Kevin Shields was an amazing musician and producer, but weak willed and overly awed by his own press clippings. To be fair, he had a justifiable fear of the UK music press, which was notorious for build-em-up-and-break-em-down.

I'm cynical enough that I think the state of their bank account has more to do with it.

I agree. Need cash? Paint a painting.

Having money gives the artist the freedom to create on their own terms. The starving dirtbag has to abuse the guitar every weekend at the local dive.

I'm sure it was a tipping scale, with "cash in on a whole new generation of fans" on one side and "maybe ruin our reputation" on the other.
