I guess Kevin Shields finally grew up and was able to leave his precious reputation as a mad genuis behind. The UK music press built him up so much that he feared a backlash if whatever came after Loveless wasn't the greatest album in all rock history.
To be fair, topping Loveless would be hard work. It's a fantastic album.

Agreed, but it's pathetic when an artist puts "going out on a high note" above creation of work. Van Morrison didn't grind to a screeching halt with Astral Weeks.

I suppose that was Richard Ashcroft's rationale for dissolving The Verve after one of the greatest debut albums of all time.

I'm sure it was a tipping scale, with "cash in on a whole new generation of fans" on one side and "maybe ruin our reputation" on the other.
