I don't like to brag, but I'm pretty effin' proud of myself for landing a 1 in 16 spot in the AmeriCorps program. I worked my ass off and it shows. So I thought I'd give brief updates here and there in case it interests anyone else but me. :D

The first couple of weeks have been interesting...calm, but interesting. The entire month of September and continuing for 2-3 weeks in October consists of training. We're being trained in the UIC Extension financial program called All My Money. Once we're done with training we'll be going out to various Head Start programs and giving financial/money management workshops to parents of Head Start kids all over Chicago.

On October 15 we'll go down to Springfield, IL for Opening Day Ceremonies. We'll be with AmeriCorps members from all over the state, meet/greet with Illinois politicians, be in a parade, etc. Supposed to be a fun day. Am definitely looking forward to it!

I'm on the Make A Difference Day committee (October 24th if anyone wants to get involved in their communities) and we've submitted our proposal to the higher ups. Our idea is to choose a retirement community and hold a "Senior Prom." Overall we want to make it a day to remember.

I'm also now a certified Mandated Reporter. Even though we won't be working directly with kids, we'll be around them and so we had to become certified. For anyone who's wondering, a Mandated Reporter is anyone in a job position required to report any suspicions of child abuse to DCFS.

Will add more as it comes up...

What's Americorps? I spent 14 months in iraq and four in afghanistan, those weren't good experiences. You have a 9 in 10 shot of going to one of those sexy vacation destinations if you sign up today...

Really, what is Americorps and what's it have to do with reporting child abuse?

Congrats!!! It's always nice to see someone reach a goal they've been shooting for. The head start program where I live has helped a lot of kids, and familes. Good luck to you.:rose:

Awesome! Sounds like you're on your way to making a difference. What does the training entail to teach others sensible money management?

Most gov. initiated programs through campuses partner up with other nonprofit organizations. And anything working with children have appropriate requirements in training and reporting policies.
