Music

There was a time when I had a choice to listen to either the all encompassing alternative (a range from Kate Bush, Smiths to Sugarcubes) or rock (The Stones) or Blues (Etta James) or Jazz (Thelonious Monk), or pop (Madonna) or rap (Beastie Boys) or Motown, but it seems to me that the choice has widened from seriously simple categories to such things as hip hop, trip hop, rave, goth, trance, new age, drum n' base, Nu Skool, ambient, industrial, dance, house, electronica, hard house, garage, acid, synthpop, underground, jungle, backbeat, war metal, gore metal, thrash, grunge, fusion, battle rap . .. etceteRA!

So to tell the truth, I can't figure out WTF I listen to anymore. :D

yeah, im ecclectic too.
but i really love to sing so, for the most part, ill listen to anything i can sing.
howevah...i play the hammered dulcimer so celtic music is important
and then...theres that rock thing that i cant get away from...aerosmith and led zepplin..
can't remember a time when music wasnt important to me.

If you looked at my collection, you'd see a pretty eclectic mix ranging from classical to jazz (all kinds from big band to fusion) to soul/motown to rock. But there's no pop/top 40 dance stuff and no fucking disco.

But for the most listened to it would be rock and my favorite guitar players Jimi, Jimmy Paige, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Pete Townsend, Clapton, Keith and on and on.

No disco! God, I miss K-tel :(

You'll have to excuse me, I was a mere child during the disco era, and can cop to the fact I didn't know any better, although I did have the good judgement to put my nose up at the Bay City Rollers. :D

sneaking into Lime's place and hiding K.C. and the Sunshine band, the villiage people and the beegees cd's in inconspicuous places

Ah, my first live concert. (I kid you not!) I was in the 7th grade and my dad insisted on coming along. There was actually a woman "his age" in a skin tight body suit directly in front of him, standing on the arms of the seat -- cheering wildly while smokin' a joint. Her ass was right in his face.

My next concert -- just a few months later -- was Blue Oyster Cult. Dad didn't insist on coming along.

Everything. I tend to have music moods. I can go from Faith Hill to Mystikal in a period of five minutes.

From classical to Madonna.

I love Madonna.

OMG! What a visual! Balding with big beer belly over stick skinny legs in pleated plaid.

The BCR concert was quite entertaining to a 12 year old (and a step up, I dare say, from Donny Osmond and Tony DeFranco). A very short-lived phase, thankfully. I found a much better "fit" with Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, and even Kiss.

Footnote: Wild Cherry used to play summer nights at the public pool parties where I grew up (near Pittsburgh).

Nowadays? It's mostly Indigo Girls & Melissa Etheridge by default, any of Andrew Lloyd Weber's musicals, some Bette Midler ("The Rose"), some Streisand ("A Star Is Born"), various movie soundtracks, Annie Lennox, Barenaked Ladies, Billy Joel (late 70s stuff), Aerosmith (still -- or again, rather), etc.

I'm into a lot of music. Lots of classic rock, especially the Eagles, Journey, Aerosmith, etc. Country rock, or Southern rock, and even some Country. Some pop, not to much, mostly the stuff that's fun to dance around the house to and stuff I can dance to with my daughter. (I even own soem stuff from Brittney. Oh, the shame of it!)

Lots of Sheryl Crow, one of my favorites along with Michelle Branch and Jewel, (but mostly her older stuff).

Also blues, BB King is a big favorite.

There is also some 70's stuff in the collection. Disco... yes, I admitted it... come on, who really doesnt like Stayin' Alive or Dancing Queen?

I have just never been able to get used to the lead singers nasal voice. Gives me shivers every time - eee. The better Canadian voice is Nelly :D and I only like Celine music when she is impersonated by the crew of Saturday Night Live. ;)

I with Vella...I listen to anything I can sing to.

Favs: Sheryl Crow...Vanessa Carlton...Vanessa Williams...Beyonce...Mariah Carey...Bonnie Ratt....Faith Hill....Frank Sinatra...

Groups: Bon Jovi - Bare Nake Ladies - Destiny's Child - Pink Floyd - AC/DC - , etc

Madonna's still rocks...although I like Ray of Light...definately get some speed on the road with that one.

I rushed out to get the "Barenaked for the Holidays" CD ... and was kinda disappointed with it. :( I already had the best track ("God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlement") from another CD.

Don't you just LOVE "You Can Be My Yoko Ono" ??? I think that's my favorite. :D

Well, not surprisingly, I'm all about lyrics. I don't have any genre specifications. If the words are strong and true, then I love the piece. Some of my favorites right now are:
Kate Bush (Babushka captured my heart at 13 years old)
REM (what could be better than Michael Stipe telling you that You Are the Everything)
U2 (ahhhhh, Bono Bono, Bono)
Bare Naked Ladies (if it's all about the words for you, you can't go wrong)
Billy Pilgrim (there's a line in Insomniac that perfectly captures the severe anguish of prolonged sleep deprivation: I pray for the day when my ship comes in, And I can sleep the sleep of the just again)
Cake (but I confess, I'm still listening to their first album Fashion Nugget- Friend Is A Four Letter Word - have truer words ever been spoken?)
Madonna (When you call my name it's like a little prayer, I'm down on my knees, I'm gonna take you there - special kudos to her for being such a strong and powerful woman even in the face of criticism)
Lyle Lovett (crosses so many genres, always always always tells the big truth)
Concrete Blond (the first album was perfect my angst filled teen years)
Peter Gabriel (I don't care what anyone says, the man's a fucking musical genius)
Deee Lite (Still tickles my fancy all these years later)
Nickleback (Perfect for dark moody days and his voice makes me wet)
And so many more...

But hands down, and every time, it's the Indigo Girls for me. Beautiful melodies, beautiful harmonies and lyrics that cut through the shit and tell the truth. Who can argue with a line that says:

I don't want what's best for you cause where will I be when you've found it....

Or

The politician locks my eye and says to me, there is no crisis here, there's no conspiracy...

I'm the Queen of the Self Made Compilation. Everything gets dumped into my hard drive and then piece play lists together based on my mood or what I'm trying to accomplish.

Fun thread! Thanks Sima for starting it!

I'm checking out everyone's favorites on my free trial of RealRhapsody. This is just too cool. :D

My taste is very eclectic but for the last year or so, I've been obsessed with Damien Rice. I listen to "O" over and over. I think it is an almost perfect CD. One of his songs is being used for the "Closer" trailer so I expect him to only get better known here.

Umm, and ABBA. I love ABBA. If I need to clean or do anything to get moving and keep moving I play ABBA. :)

Scads of other stuff, too. Scads…

Luck to all,

Yui

I listen to mostly techno/trance. I also have a fondness for 80's music.
