It's been open for over 14 years that I am aware of.

I've been to the NYC one. Very boring. I recommend you give it a pass. An average thread in this forum has more explicit and interesting content.

Years ago, there was an exhibit of sex including art and objects of historical value. It was in San Francisco and was fabulous. Along the wall going up a long staircase were etchings depicting the alphabet with bodies twisted into the letters.
Never forget it! I wanted to buy a few letters but prints weren't for sale.

I live in NYC and, yes, there is one here. The exhibits vary wildly in my experience so I find that whether people liked it or not when they went has more to do with what was there at the time.

An exhibit I liked just left (NSFW: Female Gaze) that showcased the work of female artists exploring sexuality on their own terms.

For those of you who are interested in the intersection of fine art and sexuality, there is a Leonor Fini exhibit there right now that is worth seeing. I've long been a big fan of her work (surrealism).

There's also a sex shop in front that you can pop into whether you're seeing the museum or not. Every time I pass there's a bunch of young women in the windows excitedly checking out dildos.

Here’s a museum of sex anecdote from the aforementioned female gaze exhibit. There were some good pieces there, including a really nice Lust Cinema short film about a young woman rushing home to masturbate while fantasizing about a guy she just saw at the bus stop. Anyway, there happened to be a series of photos taken from an omniscient overhead view. They were of young men laying down with massively erect cocks, masturbating in private in a dimly lit room. The photographer did a good job of conveying her curiosity and voyeuristic desire as a distant observer.

So I noticed a family walk in. Granted, I hadn’t been to the museum in years but I sure don’t remember ever seeing a family going there together. It kinda blew my mind. A mother was walking along with her two adult daughters and noticed that they were sneaking bashful peeks at these photos so she led them over to examine them together while the dad amusingly lingered in the back, nervously. It took me by surprise and was a little shocking but it turned out to also be a tender moment with the mother handling her daughters’ curiosity with great maturity and not allowing them to feel guilty about wanting to take a closer look at their penises.

I din’t know whether to think “gosh, I could never lead family members into a situation like that” or “wow, that’s a brave mother embracing her duty as a parent and teacher.” I guess the latter sentiment is what the whole exhibit about female sexual empowerment was meant to inspire, though. So kudos to that photographer, I’m sure she’d be happy to have witnessed the same event. Regardless, I'm not sure if I ever saw whole families at the one in Amsterdam, though that was two decades ago on a family trip. -- We had all reluctantly admitted were were each going to sneak away to the red light district at some point but we made darn sure none of us ended up there at the same time...

Agreed. I thought it was lame. First it tries to pass itself off as scientific with some perfunctory evolutionary pieces, and it gets worse from there. There are 1,000 other interesting sex options in NYC.
