The best workout routine is one that you build yourself. It all depends on what you want to get out of your workout. Are you looking to build mass? Or perhaps you're looking for strength? Then again, you may be after an improved level of physical fitness.

Gauge your current level of physical fitness. (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, etc). Depending on where you are, you may want to build your workout differently. If you're beginning, you will want to start slowly. If not, you probably know your limits. (Watch our for second day soreness... ;)

If you're new to this, you will probably be surprised to find out that what you do in the gym is only about 25% of building mass or strength. The other 75% comes from eating, and sleeping. No alcohol, lots of sleep, and lots of good quality food. Balance your protein, carbs, and fats. Remember that protein builds muscle, and that carbohydrates and fats power it. Get good quality carbs and fats, not the fast food junk stuff...

Anyway, I do a 4 way split 3 days a week. (4 major groups of muscles, with 3 workouts per week). This gives me a lot of time to recover before I hit a body part again. I lift moderately heavy, with most lifts after a good warmup being 65 to 85% of my one rep max for 6 to 12 reps. I've found this to be the best for me for mass growth. Strength is slightly weaker from this routine, but I'm not into power lifting. I also throw in a couple of good miles on the elliptical runner beforehand for a warmup (I have asthma, and have found the elliptical runner to provide good intensity without triggering and attack).

A good source of info is Muscle and Fitness magazine. It's a well balanced magazine, that promotes healthy habits, and detailed exercises...

Hope this helps.
