Multi-Part story with a maxed-out Story Title?

Looks like Lit has a Story Title limit of 35 characters.

If I max that out with a story title, then later decide to add a 'part 2' or extra chapter, am I just out of luck, or is there something LIT does with dark magic to allow for 'maxed out' titles to still have something tagged onto the end?

I'd rather not spend mental energy on coming up with a shorter title, but would if I had to, of course. :-/

Hope the Q made sense,
Roo

If memory serves me they can add a couple of characters. It happened to me once where even CH.10 had it past the limit, but it came out okay once they'd published it.

Thanks LC.

I haven't decided if I'm going to have a Part 2 yet anyway. (Haven't even finished Part 1!) But if I do, would I just mention in the "comments to the Admin" that this is Part 2 (just to make sure they don't accidently overwrite Part 1 thinking it was an edit)?

I haven't done this myself, but I seem to recall somebody commenting on this before and saying yes, you should send a note with a request to the admin on this point.

Perfect. Thanks!

I didn't want to paint myself into a corner but it sounds like I should be okay.

Thanks again!

When I met this problem, I reduced my story title to allow for Ch.xx etc.

When I hadn't intended any more parts, I sent a PM to Laurel to amend the original to allow for further chapters.

Right. That's my backup plan, if it comes to it.

I couldn't quite tell what is or isn't possible since the limit when submitting a new story is currently 35 characters but I thought I'd seen a few stories with longer titles than that.

Just did a search and quickly found a few.

For instance, these two (without the Chapter notations) are 33 characters, but add in the Ch. ## and it gets to 40.
So this gives me some hope that voodoo can be done by Laurel if I did add more parts later, without me necessarily having to change the core title.
  • Christmas Past, Christmas Present Ch. 02
  • The Call Girl and the Businessman Ch. 10
This one is more confusing. since the core title is already past the title limit (at 37 characters) and is 44 characters long with the Pt. 03 tacked on.
  • You Never Know Who Reads Your Stories Pt. 03

Of course, things change over time, so who knows what was allowed at different times.
Maybe the Title max was more than 35 at some point but they dialed back.

I even see user names with spaces in them sometimes which I don't think is allowed anymore, so... change happens.

Anyway, not trying to make it a big deal or anything. Just trying to decide if I should expend the effort to retitle or not... I'd really rather not... because I'm lazy... :)

When adding a fourth part to my Prize or Penalty series, I asked Laurel (in the note to editor box) to retitle the others as chapters, so the third is now "Prize or Penalty Ch. 03: Back for More" (38, if I'm counting right).

Oh, wow. That's cool.

I always thought a story series had to have the same exact title beginning to end (not counting the CH ## or PT## notations).

That's really cool that you were able to get your core title, the chapter notation, AND a subtitle even.

Every site has its technical quirks. The software on this one is mostly pretty old, I guess. Notice that there is a menu bar above the forum posts as they are written, which is nice to have, been none for the drafts mode of stories.
