Okay, I/we watched this film. I thought I had it down but then I read a website that says this entire film was Diane’s dream. That’s absolutely not what I got out of it.

I wanted to se it but never got around to it. Was it any good?

That's nice, but how did your roommate react? ;)

I told you that you have to read a couple of essays to understand this film. Salon.com had the best discussion on it.

Mind fuck, huh? Well in lieu of the other kind I'll have to check it out.

Cobra, it was quite good but the film drags in places.

Heya Nora, she was gone when I first started watching, she came back during the middle and has been playing on her computer throughout.

Mischka, it’s not that I need essays to understand the film. I’ve already worked out a sequence of events and action/reaction that I consider logical. I’m reading the Salon.com one right now and I’m in disagreement with all of it’s points. I’m guessing it’s the difference between those raised on ‘realistic’ movies and those raised on Sci-Fi and fantasy movies.

Hello Ruby, good to see you. :)

Hello Ruby, good to see you. :)

Despite the fact that it dragged did you find it for the most part kept you engaged?

I had the exact same reaction when I first saw the movie, but I enjoyed reading the discussions to see alternate viewpoints. Salon completely got the blue box wrong, but I can see a few of the other points.

Yes, the film is 125 minutes long and it's only natural that there be a few spots that need triming. It's a great film overall.

I watched it a couple of times and I still don't know what's going on. But that's the beauty of David Lynch's work - being confused can be fun! I just told myself it was a girl-on-girl porno with a lot of fluff. heh. j/k the plot was good too. :)

What did you think the blue box was?

Oh, Mischka has departed me and I'll never know what she thought of that blue box. Dear me.

never did it not bug you that they seemed to dimiss the relationship between diane and rita i guess i enjoyed that part of the film that i felt cheated when they seemed to take the dream route

but i guess that is how i was meant to feel

i cant really get the film other than to say its a dream how do you see it never im curious :)

Rubyfruit:
“Oh lordy.”

Something wrong hun?

Sexy-girl,
“never did it not bug you that they seemed to dimiss the relationship between diane and rita i guess i enjoyed that part of the film that i felt cheated when they seemed to take the dream route

You mean the relationship between Betty and Rita? A ‘dream’ interpretation doesn’t just dismiss their relationship but 3/4th of the film.

”i cant really get the film other than to say its a dream how do you see it never im curious”
(Ow, I just bit my tongue)
I see it as a Mobeus strip with the same actors playing different characters and different actors playing the same character.

If the first 3/4ths is a dream then it’s a dream, followed by flashbacks, and ending in a hallucination. I find it odd that the part in which people act in an incomprehensible manner, people morph into one another, and time skips erratically is considered reality while the part that has reasonable characterization, a liner time flow, and which fits an ordered sequence of events is considered the dream.

If these events are only a product of Betty’s mind then why do they continue after her brains are splattered on the wall?

describing it as a mobius strip actually makes sense :) hmm i'll have to think of it along those lines

i do feel cheated to just hear its all a dream in her head i want to see more in the film im trying

the first 3/4 is very good the last 1/4 i didn't enjoy so much but i somehow think that's planned the last 1/4 is meant to be slightly painful and not what you want

you want the relationship in the first film to carry on like diane/betty does but it doesn't/can't and so you feel the same as what diane feels

I thought the film was surreal and disjoint and jagged and sensual and erotic and hard to follow and, so, was just precisely, exactly, what i crave and need and want from a David Lynch film.

His films are always a ride, like the old rickety coasters are a ride. Bound to be distinctive in terms of sights and sounds and images and the overall experience, all of his films are often kinda confusing. They're defintely a pain/pleasure thing, in BDSM terms.

I thought Mulholland Drive was gorgeous and lush, one of his better works, actually.
:rose:

Is this the movie with Chuck Noltie and Jennifer Connely? It sucked, except my Jenny.

Sexy-girl,
A lesbian in a movie ends up killing herself and/or her lover. HOW ORIGINAL. What will Hollywood think of next? ;)

Cym,
This is the first time I’ve seen a David Lynch film. It reminded me of 12 Monkeys only with two women making out.

CV,
Huh?

never thats why you should see f**king Åmål :)

i agree though i think the film would of been remembered a lot better if he took the first 3/4 of the film and took it somewhere else without having to throw it all away ... maybe that was to challenging but it would of been great to see a mainstream hollywood film with a natural lesbian couple in it

I don’t mind the director being himself, David Lynch is known for the oddness in his films. The assassin sequence was great, the mafisto with the espresso was great, the guy with the dream at Winkles sequence was great. Oddly enough, the moments with the two women seem Spartan in comparison. It’s as though the really interesting, memorable things happen to everyone but them.
