Muhammad Ali has died.

Probably the first time Americans will pay tribute to a Muslim.

Really? WTF? One of the greatest boxers dies and somehow you have to make it some kind of a political statement?

He will be missed.

Never knew his religion and don't care.

His name kinda gives it away.

R.I.P. to The Greatest Fighter of All Time.

May have been even more important outside of the ring.

That's like saying you didn't know Lucille Ball had a hit tv show.

It may boggle your mind but I just watched his fights. I was watching a great fighter win and lose. Do you know the religion of Rhonda Rousey or Hope Solo?

He changed his name to Mohammad. That's not a clue?

Ali's religious conversion was the most prominent religious conversion of any athlete, ever.

You've now cemented yourself as a complete moron.

I met both the champ (and Howard Cosell) briefly in 1972 at the Olympic boxing trials in West Point, NY. As a college intern, I was sent out by the magazine I was working for in Manhattan that summer to interview both on the prospects of the then current "Great White Hope," U. S. Olympian Duane Bobick.

Needless to say, it was one of my most memorable days as a student journalist.

Rest in peace champ. Thanks for the thrills and the memories. :rose:

From google

It is estimated that more than 150 million men and boys in the world bear the name Muhammad. Muhammad was the most common baby boy name in England and Wales in 2009, 2011 and 2012 and the second most popular in 2007 and 2010, combining 14 spelling variations.

You never did answer what religion Rhonda and Hope are.

That was part of the myth-making machinery around him at the time. Other names that were considered but dismissed included Lance Stinger and Flynn Stone.

...seriously?

You'll never live this down. But please, for everyone's entertainment, keep trying.

Clue: it's not c of e parents choosing that name over here.

...and I am not saying he wasn't once a great boxer. He was! And a terrific role model for young black people not only in the US but elsewhere.

Just alerting people who are quick to denounce 'the other' namely, in this case, Muslims, yet those same people will declare their total admiration for this one.

What will Trump say about his passing? Oh wait, no one but Trump matters.

btw sport AND politics do mix.

Oh my god. You have called me out for something I didn't know. Well I guess I should feel internet shamed for two seconds. Phew, thank goodness that is over.

<snip>Never knew his religion and don't care.
He converted to Islam as a political thing - the Nation of Islam promoted (and still do) a type of liberation theology to people of African descent at a time when racial equality had a lot further to go.

To give Muhammed Ali his due, he refused the draft, for political reasons - he believed that mostly non white Americans were being sent to Vietnam to kill other non whites. This might not be seen as impressive now, but at the time, it took a lot of guts to publicly do that and refuse to budge.

As a boxer, he was a strategic thinker, driving other boxers mad with his "rope a dope". This makes it all the sadder that the head blows received probably contributed to him developing parkinsonism later on.

RIP one of the greatest.

Nice story. :)

I've fond memories watching him fight.

To the bashers of Ali I say do your research and include his time outside of the ring!

Or perhaps more simply put, Go fuck yourselves!

I admired his boxing. This thread is an appreciation of that. Sorry for getting off topic.

That's some really funny shit in here! (most of the thread).
I'm not a fan of boxing, but Christobal - you just made this thread worth reading for me.:D

Ali was a slob compared to Joe Louis. Louis beat the best, and Ali beat the bums.
