What benefit has MTV given the world? Take away the given-entertainment.

Go back a few years and I can come up with a few.

First: MTV singlehandedly saved the corporate music industry. At the time MTV debuted, Americans wer branching out to other forms of entertainment. Video games, VCR's, and Atari's had cut record sales to all time low's. MTV turned that around pretty fast.

Second: Band-aid, Farm-aid, Live-aid, etc did quite a bit for the downtrodden. Shame they stopped.

Third: Social issue recognition. MTV's Rock The Vote, their constant pursual of discrimination and racism issues, and sexual issues pushed the envelope and got people to thinking and talking.

Can anyone else think of any other benefits MTV has given society.

Oh, and they sure made singers prettier. Look at Neil Young, do you think he would have made it in the post MTV music business?

I've watched MTV for probably a total of 10 minutes in my lifetime.

No benefits I can see, nope.

Although I wouldn't say it's that big of a benefit to society, I've liked how Mtv was one of the first cable channels in the early 90's that was more open to animated shows aimed towards teens/adults. That's pretty much the only thing I can think of right now since you've taken all the good answers. Damn my lack of imagination and memory.

i think though music videos arent music ... there something different mtv helped push music videos but thats probably done more harm to music then good :) although maybe it helped overal sales

Ok, did anyone understand any of this? I would like to respond but it's like reading the post of a hummingbird. Lots of energy and all over the place.

Damn that Cockney accent!

*scratching head* I'm a little confused myself.

 <----See?
