I saw an awsome movie the other day with subtitles. it was about a male oppera singer who worked for or with Handel. I found it quite by accident and was amazed by how great (and suprisingly very sexed up) it was.

What foriegn language movies have you enjoyed that you would recomend?

And has anyone else seen this movie?

Don't be scared. this is a facinating topic about the true story of the hero of this film- and many other opera singers: https://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?t=368657

La Grande Seduction or Seducing Dr Lewis - Quebec (French language) movie about a small town trying to entice a doctor to come live there. Much funnier than any Hollywood comedy I've seen lately.

Tampopo - Japanese movie about their culture and food.

Ran - Japanese movie that is based on King Lear. Absolutely stunning visuals and by the time it was over, I didn't even realize that there were subtitles ... I was so enthralled with the movie.

My Mother Likes Women - Spanish movie about the three daughters of a woman who starts up with another woman. Kinda cute.

Intacto - Spanish movie about luck.

I just rented the -02 version of "The Importance Of Being Ernest", and...

Oh, you mean foreign for you. Never mind. ;)

Sweet, first of all, the entire catalog of Pedro Almodóvar's movies is a good start.

Well if you're into psych horror and have ever thought gosh, I'm way too jaded and numb to the world then you could see "Suicide Club". It's a japanese film and probably the single best test to see if you are too jaded yet. If it fucks you up, you're not too jaded yet.

I rather liked "Turtles Can Fly" as well.

There's also a wealth of incredible animated films coming from Japan if you don't mind that. Hayao Miyazaki's work is always incredible and has been released theatrically over here. "Ghost in the Shell" and "Akira" are classics. Ditto for "Metropolis". "Steamboy", "Perfect Blue", "Millenium Actress", and "Grave of the Fireflies" are great.

And for a porn audience, "Kite" is probably the single best written porn movie in history. Incredibly sad and nihilistic in a way they'd never allow in America.

Y Tu Mama' Tambien directed by Alfonso Cuaron. very sexy, very good...

Fellini.
Ya gotta see everything he ever made! :) Or, at least, see Satyricon, Roma, Amarcord. If you like those, then see the rest...

I Highly recommend Pedro Almodovar's movies, especially "Women on The Verge of A Nervous Breakdown"

and Juzo Itami's movies for a taste of japanese modern culture He only made four films before he killed himself. Tampopo is wonderful one of the sexiest movies about food!

Eat Drink Man Woman
is another movie about food, only Chinese this time.
And if you haven't seen Kung Fu Hustle you just gotta, that's all I can say. I just picked it up on DVD and I've watched it three times in a row, but- I love cartoony stuff.

also, the last french version of Cyrano De Bergerac is the only one that made me cry...

That's an incredible one.
Oh, you like it too! Every other version- I just wanted to throttle him for not telling Roxanne. This was the only version that made sense- why he would keep his secret...

And then there's the Steve Martin/Daryl Hannah version. Go Steve! Write yourself getting the goods!

Steve Martin's brilliant.

Hero and House of Flying Daggers were both very good.

Of course, that's because they both have Zhang Ziyi in them.

On occation, definitely.

LA Story is one of the most underrated movies ever.

Ju Dou by Yimou Zhang was excellent. It was banned in China which was enough reason for me to watch it.

I loved Hero. A friend of mine who's a slow reader went to it. He was lost after the first few scenes.

I'm big into the Cowboy Bebop series and movies....there's a noticeable difference between the Japanese version with English Subtitles and the English voice-over. Appleseed is another one. The original from the mid-80's is funny and will teach you all the prolific uses of "fuck" The newer one that released in the 'States this last year is amazing.

Luicfer, the creative crew behind Grave of the Fireflies has a host of awesome movies like that! Castle in the Sky is coming to mind, as well as one about a girl going through the spirit world, but I can't remember what that one's called. Great set of Anime!

You'll love House of Flying Daggers then. There's even some skin!

The one about the girl going through the spirit world is probably Spirited Away which was just great! An interesting cross between Cinderella and The Oddysey.

I caught the new Appleseed movie a couple of weeks ago. That was cool. I like how it managed to include Humanistic philosophy with very cool action.

Looking forward to seeing Howl's Moving Castle when it comes out on DVD.

Flying Daggers was very nice. Saw it last month for the first time.
Spirited Away is the one I was thinking about. And yeah, it's really good.

Versus, a Chinese movie (I think...that or Japanese, can't remember right now) is very...interesting. You'll either get it right away and love it or get it right away and kick yourself for wasting two hours of your life. It's got some well choreographed fight scenes in it, if nothing else.

ths was a great flick, gorgeous....
also chocolate....i think was the name. it was mexican

Like Water for Chocolate - a great movie.

The original "Shall We Dance"- and not the Gere/Lopez one was amazing. Set in its original context, it just made that much more sense in its Japanese content. Wonderfully done movie and well worth the minor MINOR quibble with subtitling.

My only beef with subtitles was back in the day when they ran the type directly over the visuals and it blended in at times (ie. black type during a night scene). Thankfully they've got it right now by putting a drop shadow on the type or having it in a complete bar underneath.

BINGO

loved the book and the movie with subtitles was even better...hard to do yannow?

Ok, I'm going to be the fourth one to mention Life Is Beautiful. It's one of those movies you want to keep forever and watch whenever you find yourself losing faith in people.

Antonia's Line is a Dutch movie that's very good. It's full of magic realism and tells the story of several generations of women, starting at the end of the second world war, going through the rebellious seventies and ending in the present day. It's beautifully written, funny, has a strong sense of justice and plenty of sex - although most of it is done in a tongue in cheek way.

Goodbye Lenin is another really interesting idea. It's a German movie that's set just before the Berlin Wall comes down and communism tumbles. It's about a woman who's a staunch communist, who happens to fall into a coma, then wake up when East Berlin is being westernised. Apparently, if she gets any kind of shock she'll have a heart attack and die, so her son has to use his creativity to convince her that the communists are still in power. Very amusing.

Il Postino is beautiful. Not a big storyline, but the scenery is breathtaking and it leaves you with a real warm feeling afterwards.

And that's about all I can think of for now. :rose:
