Hi, I'm new and just finding my feet around here. I wrote a story called "Slave Ship Sodomy" and placed it in the Anal category "surprise, surprise", and was disappointed to find it "moved " to non-consent reluctance. In my opinion it doesnt "fit" there and unsurprisingly is getting poor ratings,

Clearly there is frequently "overlay" between categories on story content. Firstly what can I do to "challenge" this category move? Secondly what advice can other authors give to ensure that a story does "stick" in its designated category ( I have had no trouble with the other eight.)

I did write the story carefully around the PC mantraps. ironically I saw non-consent as one of the traps!
As a side issue it is interesting to note how many of the Black man on white woman inter racial stories follow the "mandingo" stereotype and are apparently perfectly acceptable, whilst the reverse in a power play is much more "dangerous", or have i got this wrong?

Send a PM to Laurel and ask her to move it, explaining why.

It happens occasionally that stories get put in the wrong place. Not sure why.

I had to re-submit, or so I thought. I pasted the thing into the box again and then made my argument in the "notes" box. It worked. But it may be possible to argue the case by PM. Can't hurt.

Nice work. It's well-written, though brief. Terrific effort.

I agree that it's in the wrong category.

I found a word that may have kicked it in. "Reluctant."

Stories are approved automatically - computers instead of human eyes - and occasionally they make mistakes.

I do agree that your feedback, too, would be better in a different category.

PM the site owners - Laurel or Manu - and let them know. Not email, PM.

Good luck!

Good advice. Laurel's the grand poo-bah of all things incorrect on Lit.

I once had a Lesbian Sex story I submitted in that cat, yet when it posted it was in Erotic Couplings. I got good votes, reads and an H , so I'm not complaining. ;)

No explanation why tho.

It was my understanding that stories are placed according to a "hierarchy of offensiveness". In other words, they're rated according to what the most offensive sexual act is in the story so as not to spring it on an unsuspecting reader. Since non-consent/reluctance is close to rape and more offensive than anal sex, it probably went to that category.

Ah.

The category designed to offend the least amount of readers, then.

Generally speaking, Anal Sex would be consensual sex between a man and a woman. If it's two men, it is Gay Male and if it is two women, it is Lesbian. If it's anal rape, it's Non-consent/Reluctance. With a name such as "Slave Ship Sodomy" it sounds as if it would have been nonconsual, or rape.

ETA: Okay, I read the story, and I would not regard it as an anal story, becvause it was not consensual enough. The man and the women involved were not equal enough for me to put it in the Anal category but it was also not really non-consensual. I think it would fit in the Reluctance part of the category, because the women certainly did not consent to be in that situation in the first place. This would make it more akin to a sexual harassment or extortion kind of sex.

It could also probably go into Group or Interracial sex.

Fair comment boxlicker. I'm just making sure I understand how the categories "work" for future submissions. I am writing for different categories at the moment, and it is a challenge to meet the requirements of each category without "crossing over" too much.

This raises a question for me-- is 'crossing over' a problem? I took my stories off of lit, partly because it was so difficult for me to make the call. When I write lesbian BDSM, I write it for lesbians to read.
