Mouse problems.....

Hello.

I have a friend that is unable to use his computer because his mouse will only move "vertically". When he changed to a different mouse, the second mouse would only move "horizonally".
Any thoughts?

My first thought is that both mice need to be cleaned. Remove the mouse ball and check the rollers for a build up of dirt, grime, and hair -- carefully clean the rollers with a Q-Tip and rubbing alcohol.

Second point (bypassing the bad mouse cord option,) is that his mouse driver is corrupted. Reinstalling the mouse software is the solution to this common problem.

Third Point: The mouse port may have been "zapped" by static electricity or failed for some other reason -- shutting the computer down completely for an hour might correct the problem is it's only scrambled.

If the port is "fried" instead of scrambled, then suggest he try a USB mouse or an older style serial mouse -- both of which bypass the "mouse port." Both types will require different mouse drivers -- supplied with new Mice, but sometimes problematic with used mice.
