I tend to run a lot of my titles through the Lit search engine to see if they've been used before. Sometimes I'm amazed by what titles haven't been used. (No one has ever written something here called 'A Cuck and Bull Story' Really? Although 'A Cock and Bull Story' has been claimed) Othertimes, I find my titles aren't as original as I thought. I was tossing around ideas for a Loving Wives story where the father of the husband discovers the wife is cheating and decides to deal with the situation himself. I didn't love 'Father knows best' as a title, but I thought I'd see if it had been used. Sure enough 4 times. Then just out of interest, I tried 'Mother knows best'

By my counting there have been at least 26 separate stories with some variation of Mother knows best as the title (including Mom knows best, Mother still knows best, but not Mother in Law knows Best) and only including multi-part stories once.

So, I throw down the gauntlet. Can you find a title which has been used more often? And even if you can't, throw in some titles that have been well-used over the years.

My original title was "The Princess and the Aurochs," but the submission was cited on suspicion of bestiality. There wasn't any of course, just a brief reference to animal husbandry. Still though, just to be on the safe side, when I resubmitted, I changed the title to The Storm. I figured that if Shakespeare could have "The Tempest" I could have "The Storm." Turns out 14 other great minds on this site thought the same.

I just throw “Naked” or “Nude” in my titles. Oh: then I have to be sure someone takes their clothes off!

"Teacher's Pet" has at least 117 submissions, not counting variations on the title.
Good one. Not even sure how to count them at this point. Searching for 'teacher pet' gives me 242 results, my favourite being 'Gillian Anderson: Teacher's Pet' but I'm not sure, does Pet Teacher count? Becoming the Teacher's Pet? Teacher is the Pet? Regardless, I think this is the new number one.

There may have been some concern that the bovines were under eighteen.

I did a search for Teacher's Pet for Titles Only and found 22 hits, all of which have "Teacher's Pet" in the title, but not necessarily being the entirety of the title. I counted 11 separate stories titled "Teacher's Pet," counting stories with multiple published chapters as a single story, and also counting "A Teacher's Pet" as an insignificant variation.

I got 33 total hits for "mother knows best." I counted 19 separate Mother Knows Best titles, once I combined chaptered stories into one and excluded titles with additional significant elements.

So as far as I can tell, Mother Knows Best still has the title.

I looked at the special search commands page and as far as I can tell it's not possible to search ONLY for a single term without pulling up titles that include other words as well. If someone knows how to do that, it would be helpful.

Loose count, there are 60 or 70 stories with "We Need to Talk" or some variant in the title. Maybe more, I only looked at the first two pages of results.

The search function seems a bit weird. I got the same 22 as you to begin with, but then noticed that - teacher pet - got significantly more. For some reason the original list had 'A teacher's pet' but not 'The teacher's pet'. The original search seemed to be excluding things it's shouldn't.

I got 65 from "We need to talk" and just titles.

Strangely "We need to fuck" is still up for grabs.

"Lady in Red Pt. ## Ch. ##" has 33 entries
"Lady in Red Ch. ##" has 32 entries
"Lady in Red" has 14 entries

My story, 'A New Beginning' has a 46 after it.

'Bound' has a 38.

'Jessica' also has 38

That's the first 100 of my stories. The rest are titles free of other stories or only have 1-17 of the same name.

Interesting. I've noticed those numbers in the URLs but never given them much thought. The Photo Shoot has a 35, so not super original on my part. The Work Trip would probably have more, but I had a weird naming convention with subtitles on that one.

Can't go by the number in the URL because that doesn't account for multi-part stories. We'd really have to go by the search results list.

There are at least 60 Bucket List stories, not to mention the several that use a different word than Bucket but sounds a hell of a lot like it.

Of my stories, Class Reunion and Coming Together both have 13 in the url. I think I’ve been more original with the other titles.
I have a story called The Countesses of Tannensdal. Not only is it unique here, but if I search for "Tannensdal" I get no hits anywhere on the internet.

That's presumably why almost no-one has read it.
