Having never had a baby ( thank gawd!) I have no point of reference for this. Does it come on all of a sudden, say for instance, as soon as you wake up? Is it a gradual nausea after you're out of bed and moving about? It's going to tie into a story is the reason I'm asking. Thanks in advance!

Short answer: It varies.

Longer answer: It was different for each of my 3 kids. One pregnancy, I had NONE. The next, I had mild nausea for a few mornings (just until I ate). The last, I puked a couple of times late in the day.

However, I know women who need IV fluids they get so dehydrated from the emesis. Continual, all day for many weeks, emesis.

Morning sickness can hit any time of day. It's caused by a combination of hormones, increase sense of smell, and the relaxation of the valve at the top of the stomach. It can be mild, making a woman vaguely nauseous any time or all day, or it can be so severe that a woman requires meds and hospitalization for IV fluids. In very rare cases, it can cause maternal death (one of the Bronte sisters died of it). In its more severe forms, it's called hyperemesis gravidum (emesis meaning vomitting, hyper meaning extreme and gravidum meaning of the pregnant woman). The best thing to do when you're experiencing morning sickness is to eat protein in any form: meat, eggs, cheese, nuts, nut butter, tofu, etc. If a woman seriously can not tolerate any protein, she needs to eat SOMETHING - anything that sounds good, even if it's not considered typically healthy. Spiking and dropping of blood sugar are large contributors to morning sickness, so even though it seems counter-intuitive, eating just a few bites of something can really help. It's a good idea for a woman in the first trimester (first 14 weeks of pregnancy) when morning sickness is usually at its worst to always have a small snack with her so she can start munching as soon as she feels the least bit off.

I hope that helps. I have lots of information about pregnancy, as does SelenaKitten, if you need more help,

Yep it varies from woman to woman, and even from pregnancy to pregnancy.

Some feel nauseous night and day, some throw up in the morning once or twice and feel better after.

I was nauseous but never actually got sick with my daughter, with my son I threw up night and day for 8 weeks. Ick.

Some are fine until some odor sets them off (ketchup always did that to me - shudder).

Supposedly it ends when the placenta has completely formed.

I would be fine until it was time for me to clean my teeth and then it would hit. It got so bad that I developed a real fear of having the toothbrush in my mouth. Even now, six years after my last pregnancy that feeling still lingers...

I have heard that ginger helps to alleviate the nauseous feelings and I used to nibble ginger crunch biscuits as soon as I woke up.

janiexx:)

I've been one of the lucky ones -- I've not thrown up, yet, and seeing as how I'm in the home stretch, I don't see that problem developing. ;) However, I know some women have a terrible time of it.

Not sure that helps. Just my 2 cents. :)

Mint toothpaste truly gagged me.

I used bubble gum kid's toothpaste to survive.

I never really suffered from it too badly. My last pregnancy made me feel nauseous in the morning, so i nibbled on a plain biscuit before i got up. That helped a little. Baked beans made me want to puke tho - couldn't stand the smell of them...

I had a neighbour who suffered so badly she had to be hospitalised in the end. She was five months pregnant and she had lost so much weight, she looked anorexic. Scary indeed.
