I had been scrimping and saving every penny I had found, or any odd job I could get outside of the orphanage for the last couple years. I knew when I turned 18 I was going to be allowed to leave this filthy place and I was damn glad. I didn’t care what was out there, it had to be a whole lot better than busting my ass in here for nothing, punished for the slightest thing as a cuss word, and the unending rules.
The day had finally come and I hugged some of girls that I had become friends with, all of them wishing they could leave with me, and me wishing the same. I packed my measly belongings in a small cloth bag I had found, dressed in the only decent dress I had which wasn’t much more than a make over shift, but at least it wasn’t torn and ragged like the couple ugly work dresses they had made me wear.
I walked out, flipping off Mrs. Odell, the house mother, or bitch as we all called her and made my way to get a ticket on the next stagecoach out of town. I wasn’t sure where I was going to go, but where ever it was headed, so was I. I didn’t care about the looks I got from the people boarding the stagecoach; there wasn’t much I could do about my shabby appearance. But who knew what the future held, maybe someday I would be all fancied up like that, I was a hard worker and you just never knew.
I was sitting looking out at the dusty trail, a smile on face, not caring that the others were ignoring me and trying not to sit to close, although I did notice some rather strange looks from the two fellows, but I ignored them. .Sure I’m not good enough for the likes of either of you, but that wouldn’t stop ya from bedding me. Not that I had ever done that, but I knew plenty and had even witnessed a few of the other girls sneaking in boys when they could.
I had fallen asleep and I wasn’t sure for how long, but suddenly the stagecoach stopped abruptly and I was jerked awake. There were gun shots and angry voices and the next thing I saw was a strange man opening the door yelling for everyone to get out. I was shaking moving further back in the corner watching everyone get out, the women in tears, but the look on the strange mans face scared me most of all. He was extremely tall and very good looking, with a very deep tan, but everything about him seemed dark, his clothes, his hair, his eyes, yes those eyes, it was as if I had seen the devil himself. Everyone else had gotten off and I sat frozen, staring at him, unable to move.
