More than 5,000 dead birds fall from sky in Arkansas

The birds had fallen Friday night over a 1-mile area of Beebe, and an aerial survey indicated that no other dead birds were found outside of that area. The workers from U.S. Environmental Services started the cleanup Saturday.

Robertson said the workers wore the suits as a matter of routine and not out of fear that the birds might be contaminated. He said speculation on the cause is not focusing on disease or poisoning.

Several hundred thousand red-winged blackbirds have used a wooded area in the town as a roost for the past several years, he said. Robertson and other officials went to the roost area over the weekend and found no dead birds on the ground.

unseasonable cold?

I once read that flocks of nasty, introduced starlings were wiped out by the ten thousand by helicopters spraying detergent on them at night as they roosted?

West Nile Virus?

Don't see any plot bunnies in this one, though. :(

Hell probably just spontaneously appeared below that area. Let's just hope it doesn't come near us.

Witchcraft in Arkansas?

goodness, the report i posted yesterday said 1000 birds - so one of the papers got it wrong  most likely a weather-related event.

Arkansas Game & Fish is trying to figure out why 100,000 fish in Northwest Arkansas turned up dead. They were found along a 20-mile stretch between the Ozark Dam and Highway 109 Bridge in Franklin County.

The 20-mile stretch along the Arkansas River where an estimated 100,000 drum fish were found washed ashore and floating looks much different now.

I'm sure there will be good explanations for these kills, but then again some people will find some passage in the Bible and use it to show it's the end of the world coming. (Just watch.)

"Yey, and the red-winged black birds will fall dead in Arkansas...." Might be in the Mormon bible.

Is the military doing strange thing round there this year ?
Either that or:

That's it; they ARE out there. Crop circles be damned !

Last evening, a bloke from the Wildlife Wardens in Arkansas gave some preliminary findings of Post Mortems. "Blunt-force trauma".
It seems that the fireworks were a sight too much for the scared birds and they crashed into everything.

Weather radar in Little Rock, Ark. may have captured an image of a flock of birds as they rose from nighttime roosts near Beebe, Ark. on New Year's Eve. Thousands of redwing blackbirds were later found dead on the ground nearby.

Such radar images of bird flocks are not unusual. Weather radar sites near the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and Delaware sometimes capture the radar reflections of flocks of birds as they rise into the sky at sunrise on summer mornings.

Interesting. Reports of a large fish kill in Chesapeake Bay assumed to be cause by cold water were reported today.

Possibly someone's testing an airborne laser. If it could scramble the innards of an ICBM or a spy satellite, think what it could do to the nervous system of a bird or a fish set at the right level of intensity. A concentrated burst of sound waves in rapidly modulating frequencies would have neural disruption capabilities as well.

Just wonderin'.

The Star reported Wednesday that more than 40,000 dead Velvet swimming crabs have appeared on the Thanet shoreline in England. Dead starfish, lobsters, sponges and anemones were also found.

Tony Child, Thanet Coast Project manager, told the Star that the same thing happened two and five years ago. He suspects that the cold temperatures are to blame.

See it is Global Cooling, now that Congress had adjourned and the CO2 level fell. Is it 2012 yet!

Confused by winter weather, are we? Cold stuff happens in the winter, e when the spring, summer and fall are unusually warm. Heavy snowfall and rain may be a sign of warmer than usual high-altitude temps.

The thing about climate changes is that they bring extremely unstable weather conditions with them. Big see-sawing swings for some years as the global waters shift. Temperature imbalances create new tide and wind patterns.
It doesn't take much.

But it's nearly impossible to condense these theories into soundbites, so the public hardly ever hears about them. Not to mention the public doesn't understand what a theory is, anyway.

Heard a blurb on the news that reminded me of this thread...seems a Florida Airport had to change the name of a runway from 18l to 19l, and the reason behind this is most interesting for those with an interest in science.

The 18l meant that the runway was aligned North and South, 18 being 180 degrees out of 360; the FAA approved the change to 19l, 19 being 190 degrees, implying the magnetic north had shifted some ten degrees and incoming aircraft had to adjust their equipment.

The 'bird kills' have now been documented world wide and it has been suggested that a shift in the polar magnetic north has disoriented the birds sense of direction.

This is proven science as some bird nut scientists taped small magnets to homin pidgeons heads and the birds got lost.

I tried four different sets of 'key word searches', all including, 'scientific' documentation and found nothing but opinions, no hard evidence based on science other than the speculations.

I also heard, on the news, that an average of 168 such events are reported each year, sort of a 'ho hum' attitude; sorry Liar, but I think something is rotten in Denmark...:)

Anyone?

Yeah, the Magnetic pole shifts, I think it is called progression or some such. The science guys aren't running around screaming so I guess we're going to last until the next elections anyway.
