Scientology cited in killings

THE young woman needed psychiatric care, and she knew it. She tried to get help twice, but her Scientologist parents had a religious objection to psychiatric intervention.

They denied her the treatment she wanted, then dosed the 25-year-old with their own medicine, specially imported from the US. Finally, as her mental health worsened three weeks ago, they crumbled and let her take anti-psychotic drugs she had been prescribed.

But it was too late. The unfolding tragedy came to its bloody head at Revesby last Thursday. After an argument with her mother, the young woman was found that afternoon confused and wandering the street with a knife. Inside the family home her father and teenage sister lay dead. On the driveway outside, her mother moaned for help as she bled from stab wounds.

I nearly got recruited by the Church of Scientology when I was a student. I was duped into wandering off with this woman to complete a 'short personality survey'. I agreed, because the last time I'd agreed to do a market survey I'd been given lots of free chocolate bars.

The next minute I was being told that I had serious psychological problems, and would have a complete nervous breakdown within the year unless I sought counselling from the Church of Scientology.

And there was no free chocolate...

The people are crackpots. As soon as I escaped from there I went straight to the city library and read some government reports on them. In the early 00s, they were coming very close to being labelled a forbidden cult and banned, because they suck people in and encourage them to cut off all links with family, and give all their money to the Scientology cause.

And it took over a month before they stopped calling my phone and leaving homophobic / anti-weed messages of hell and damnation.

Evil, fucked up people.

And for what it's worth, I find it easier believing I descended from an ape than from a race of aliens.

Would it be too cruel for me to suggest this is Darwinism in action...

I feel sorry for the teenage sister and the girl herself, mind you. Innocent victims of stupidity.

Happened to me too. I was asked to volunteer for a survey for a statistics company with a to me innocent sounding name. So sure, what the heck, I thought. I was bored and it was 30 minutes of my life.

Now, I knew all about the Church of Scientology and their recruitment methods, so it was pretty obvious pretty soon what was going on. And they broke pretty much the same news to me, that my mental health was in jeopardy, and that I needed help.

My response? "I have psychological issues? Oh my. Thanks for letting me know. I shall see my therapist about that right away. Buhbye now."

Two days later, these people were brought in on fraud. It's legal to recruit followers to a church, but not to do so under false pretences. (Technically, I COULD press charges if the Jehovas Wintesses that knocks on my door doesn't tell me upfront which church they're from.)

Horrifying.

I remember the damage done when Tom spouted off about post-partum depression being "curable" by Scientology.

I wonder how many followers didn't seek help because they listened to his nonsense?

I'm just curious about the basis of the allegation that they were Scientologists. Don't mistake me; I think that the Scientologists are indeed a fairly dangerous stripe of lunatic. But it seemed to me from the article, at least, that the only person who'd said that her parents were Scientologists and forbade her to take her medication was the young woman with the psychiatric disorder. It's a cruel irony, but a fairly common symptom of a severe psychiatric disorder is an unwillingness to take the medicine that might help it.

The article is pretty confusing about that, isn't it? It seems as if the parents refused treatment, and the girl explained why-- to me, at least.

"You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do … There's no such thing as a chemical imbalance in the body," Cruise said. In another interview he berated the actor Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants after the birth of her child. "These drugs are dangerous. I have actually helped people come off."

Scariest quote of the article. *shudder*

It's good to have stupid actors shooting their mouths off about things that are supposed to be deep dark secrets, IMO.

Sorry, Shang. There are many reports about the whole sorry saga. I posted that one as it had the widest overview. The allegation was actually made in a psychiatric report tendered during a court hearing.
The woman is too ill to appear in court at the moment.
