THE IMPACT OF THE GENE, Colin Tudge.
With a name like "Tudge' working against you, your wares need to be first-rate. In fact, his wares remind me of Albanian groceries. That is, gray veggies marinating in a brown liquid, and packed in glass jars that leak. Embalmed seems more on the mark than preserved.
Tudge's book is a mini-biography of Gregor Mendel cobbled together with a chronology of molecular biology, viz., genes. His facts are right and the chronology is correct, and its all poorly written. A decent edit can make the book a fair science history textbook.
In the midst of the book Tudge creates a monument to political correctness and confirms what I've suspected for a long time. Sociobiology distressed women and gays and blacks and most of the freaks on the planet, so the arch-bishops of sociobiology changed the name of their discipline to EVOLUTIONARY PSYCHOLOGY, and added a product disclaimer to the label. That is, "EVOLUTION FAVORS STRAIGHT, WHITE MALES, AND THE REST OF YOU GET A NICE GOLD STAR FOR APPEARING ON THE SHOW (but we dont agree with Mother Nature's decision). The part inside the brackets is a sop to the whiny also-rans. Tudge wastes a chapter shaking his impotent fist at Nature, assuring everyone that he thinks theyre really okay.
Sociobiology was a lot more interesting when it pissed-off women and blacks and freaks, and they rioted in the academic streets with machetes and rolling-pins and wands.
