The Ballad Of Davy Crocket
(Tom Blackburn/George Bruns)

He was born on a mountain top in Tennessee
Greenest state in the Land of the Free
Raised in the woods so he knew every tree
Killed himself a bear when he was only three
Davy, Davy Crocket
King of the wild fronteer

He was a cardfan man
His life was worthy
He had love in his hands
And his hands were dirty
And the sky turned to fire
On the day of his birth

Now he lost his love and his grief was gall
In his heart he wanted to leave it all
And lose himself in the forest tall
But answered instead his country's call
Davy, Davy Crocket
King of the Wild Fronteer

He was a mighty big man
In a mighty big land
Had a mighty big heart
And mighty big hand
When his country called
He met the demand

Fought single-handed through the Injun War
Till the creeks was swept and peace was in store
And while he was handlin this risky chore
Made himself a legend forevermore
Davy, Davy Crocket
King of the Wild Fronteer

At night he walked to the woods alone
Winding his beard
Way back home
A hero's curse, a man alone

Looking for a place where the air smells clean
Where the tree is tall and the grass is green
Where the fish is fat in an untouched stream
And teemin' woods is a hunter's dream
Hey, Davy, Davy Crocket
King of the Wild Fronteer

He was a big, big man
Davy, Davy Crocket
King of the Wild Fronteer
He sure loved those woods
Davy, Davy Crocket
King of the Wild Fronteer
Mmm, Davy!

God, my age is showing...

And then there's this old favorite...

Beverly Hillbillies

Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed,
Then one day he was shootin at some food,
And up through the ground came a bubblin crude.
Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.

Well the first thing you know ol Jed's a millionaire,
Kinfolk said "Jed move away from there"
Said "Californy is the place you ought to be"
So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly.
Hills, that is. Swimmin pools, movie stars.

Well now its time to say good by to Jed and all his kin.
And they would like to thank you folks fer kindly droppin in.
You're all invited back a gain to this locality
To have a heapin helpin of their hospitality
Hillybilly that is. Set a spell, Take your shoes off.
Y'all come back now, y'hear?.
:D

Davy!

My only famous ancestor, and a great uncle (maybe a great-great uncle, I lose track). :)

Hey i remember both of those and I am not old at all.

This is definatly before my time.

Though I do love to listen to the oldies style music.

Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, Chubby Checker, Bill Haley and the Comets, you know, shit like that....:D

'Oldies style'?

It's the only music there is. :p

Oh Yesss!

:D

You have to appreciate the oldies. For without them, we would not have all the wonderfull head banging or bootie music we all love and enjoy today.

If you wanna go back even further, you should appreciate classical as well.......or even the cavemen banging bones or sticks on the walls of thier caves for that matter.

But back to the subject at hand, :D, oldies are definatly a goody. I would much rather listen to that, then half the shit on the radio nowadays....

Ironically Cym, this is my favorite old sitcom and I learned that it was the #1 sitcom during the month/year when I was born.
And like me, "Ellie May" is originally from Louisiana.

"LAVERN & SHIRLEY"

Give us any chance, we're take it.
Give us any rules, we'll break it.
We're gonna make our dreams come true.
Doing it our way.
Nothing's gonna turn our backs now.
All the same and we will act on. [*not quite sure of this line]
We're gonna make our dreams come true.
Doing it our way.
There is nothing we won't try.
Never heard the word "impossible".
This time, there's no stopping us....We're gonna do it.
On your march, get set, and go now.
Straight ahead and we will show now.
We're gonna make our dreams come true.
And we're do it our way. Yes, our way.
Make all our dreams come true.
And we're do it our way. Yes, our way.
Make all our dreams come true.
For me and you.

This was a very inspiring song, despite the fact that it was used as a sitcom song.

Cool coincidences. That sitcom was fresh in my mind because, believe it or not, i saw a VH1 pop-up Green Acres sitcom not too long ago. (Did you know they're doing old sitcom's as pop-ups now? They're hilarious. They do lots of Brady Bunch pop-ups, and if there was ever anything suited for pop-ups, it's The Brady Bunch!)

Anyway, i'm waiting and watching for pop-ups of Gilligan's Island, though my 13 year old watched reruns of GI on Nickelodeon not that long ago so maybe it's not dead enough yet.

Gilligan's Island Theme Song

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
a tale of a fateful trip.
That started from this tropic port,
aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailin' man,
the skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day,
for a three hour tour, a three hour tour………
The weather started getting rough,
the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew,
the Minnow would be lost; the Minnow would be lost.
The ship took ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle,
with Gilligan, the Skipper too,
the Millionaire, and his Wife,
the Movie Star, the Professor and Mary Ann,
here on Gilligan's Isle.

I don';t know anything about an old Robin hood, sorry, but even though i didn't know anything about Boots and Saddles, i looked it up for you cuz i was curious:

Boots and Saddles

GLORIOUS black and white for this early 60s actioner based on the US Cavalry in the Wild West, featuring lots of flying arrows, last-minute reliefs of wagon trains by the cavalry, treacherous Red Men, unscrupulous medicine showmen and grizzled sargeants. Every episode ended with a shot of an unmounted horse by a flagpole showing the Stars and Stripes. THE MUSIC WAS THAT BUGLE CALL THEY PLAY IN THE US FORCES AT SUNSET. YOU KNOW THE ONE...

The Ballad of Robin Hood

Robin Hood, Robin Hood,
Riding through the glen.
Robin Hood, Robin Hood,
With his band of men;
Feared by the bad,
Loved by the good,
Robin Hood, Robin Hood, Robin Hood!

He called the greatest archers
To a tavern on the green;
They vowed to help the people of the king.
They handled all the trouble
On the English country scene
And still found plenty of time to sing.

Robin Hood, Robin Hood,
Riding through the glen.
Robin Hood, Robin Hood,
With his band of men;
Feared by the bad,
Loved by the good,
Robin Hood, Robin Hood, Robin Hood!

Hey JDGuy you forgot the "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8........Schlemiel, Schlamazel Hasen Pfeffer Incorporated" part ... :D

Look, up in the sky!

It's a bird!
It's a plane!
No, it's Superman!

Yes, Superman,
A visitor from a far planet
Who came to earth
With powers and abilities
Far beyond those or mortal men!

And who,
Discuised as Clark Kent,
A mild mannered reporter
For a major metropolitan newspaper

Fights the never-ending battle
For truth,
Justice,
And the American Way!!!!!!

(Anybody here as old as me??)

Superman!

As far as I'm concerned, along with Batman, the only two superheros worth bothering with.

From those two I progressed to 1950+ Science Fiction monthly magazines that fitted into your pocket. Like "If", "Astounding Worlds", Nebula". Then on to Asimov, Konnegut, Heinlen, Arthur C. Clark, Bradbury...

My world fell apart when Michael Moorcock came on the scene with his fairy stories. He has a lot to answer for...

Ah Superman!

:D

And I remember an actual song that preceded this intro, something like:

"From another planet,
Muscles made of granite,
X-ray eyes and super brain.

Is it a bird? No!
Is it a plane? No!
It's Soo-oo-oo-oo-ooperman!"

I think I just answered your age question. *g*
