First things first, this would be one of my first role plays on THIS site but I’ve written similar things elsewhere, A LOT of them so know worries I wont be completely and utterly lost, but will accept any help you can offer.

PM me if you're not clear or post in this thread either way I'll be sure to answer any and all questions

Taking a hint from some of the other RP’s on this site I’ll dedicate this thread to discussion and general info on characters and the worl around them so bare with me while I explain.

The world I’m putting together here is based in modern times a great city I call Mordugrad alone in the world nothing beyond its walls save for wilderness and ruins. The general architecture of the city is very gothic >>> http://www.google.ca/search?q=pione...gc.r_pw.&fp=b5ae7cb889d82ad3&biw=1366&bih=667

The core of this city are magic wielders of a unique nature called Keepers they guard the city from unnatural things, and all outside its border. They use their abilities by sheering away pieces of their own souls and manifesting them through spells and focuses the soul regenerates so no worries about running out of power. A FOCUS is exactly what it sounds like a way to structure thoughts there are four types:

Inks:
The warriors of the Keepers this focus places tattoos upon the flesh a specific self drawn design, these Keepers have a single potent magic that enhances their own flesh for a brief period in one of three ways...
Some are made inhumanly strong, fast, or agile,
Others enhance theirs senses and aim making them more deadly at range than any foe.
They can harden their bodies like armour, or to heal grievous wounds

Scribes:
These are the most varied of the Keepers armed with blank cards, ink and a quill they create things out of thin air, but Scribes focus on one of six elements wood, iron, ice, crystal, rock, and mist. All of them can shape these elements in anyway they wish using their cards as traps enchantments, even summoning weapons and creatures from their chosen element.

Elementals:
Like their name implies they harness the raw elements, Fire, water, sand, wind, light and shadow they choose a single element one that their thoughts are most attuned with and as long as they are near that element they can bend it to their will. But this is a dangerous focus hard to control as easily as it can harm others it can kill its wielder just as quickly because it consumes more of the soul.

Beastials:
The strangest of the Keepers they keep pets as their focus, wolves, ravens, snakes, owls, any animal that can be tamed,(no mythical pets) there are two paths they take;

Alteration they can make their pet more beastial larger and more ferocious for a brief moment.

Binding they can take the essence of their pet upon themselves, transforming themselves into a half-breed this is unfortunately a permanent transformation merging their soul with that of their pet becoming a single creature, still human in shape and face but with animal qualities this can only be done once. The best example of what they may look like is somethin more human than animal.

All of these use the soul for power but there is a limit go to far and your character will die, so you are not going to be doing anything earth shattering, like calling down tornados and the like that WILL kill your character. Keep it in common sense you’re not a god. The some can hold their abilities longer than others.

Below is a character sheet fill it out and post it in this thread if you want to join in, it helps keep thing organized and lets everyone know a little about your character.

Name:
Nickname: (if applicable)
Sex:
Age:
Height:
Weight:
Build:
Hair colour/style:
Eye colour:
Skin tone:
Type: (Ink Scribe Elemental or Beastial)
Element/Pet:
Weapon: (if applicable nothing modern the most modern thing possible would be a cross bow)
Reputation: (What others may have heard about your character through rumour if they have never met)
Brief description: (other stuff we should know about your character)
Friends: (who among the other players does your character hang around with)

Then next is the storyline I’ll start discussing that when people join, needless to say the city is MASSIVE, full of nooks and crannies for the undead and demons to lurk in, and other nocturnal monsters, as well as men and women of ill intentions.

All Keepers are trained from birth but there are different ‘church’ like schools for each Focus, and all answer to the cities council and King but no one else has authority over them, UNLESS they break the law.

Finally I’ll introduce my own character.

Name: Erik Nothnolin
Nickname: The Undying Hound
Sex: Male
Age: 23
Height:6’5”
Weight:205lbs
Build: Wiry
Hair colour/style: a mess of black, white and grey, swept back at shoulder length
Eye colour: yellow
Skin tone: slight tan
Type: Beastial
Element/Pet: Binding of a Wolf-hound >>>>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Wolfhound
Weapon: Heavy iron gauntlet and sleeve on the right hand running from knuckle to elbow, and an eight inch knife sheathed on the back of his belt.
Reputation: Known as being hard to kill and almost inescapable, rumours of his death are common and widespread but none Truly believe them.
Brief Desc: Erik is heavily scarred, and wears a grey hooded long coat hiding his tail, pointed ears, and if he smiles; sharp teeth. He’s not the most approachable person at first glance, but he’s like most big dogs in personality friendly loyal but not too be toyed with. He has all the enhancements of the large hound, speed, endurance, greater senses, agility among other things, aswell as certain habits and instincts that he has trouble ignoring.
Friends: unknown (will change if needed)

If there are any questions put them down and we will discuss the rest I’ll start the story after a few people join and we get the story straightened out. Feel free to make suggestions on anything I haven’t mentioned

Do characters have to be Keepers? And is Keeper magic the only magic? And I'm guessing humans are the only playable race, correct?

You don't have to be a Keeper but its illegal to learn those focuses outside the traditional means, so you can be a Rogue(maybe I should've added that)

Anything with intelligence and a Soul can learn and use magic, and Rogues are still human make so yes just humans BUT a vampire can use 'someone else's' soul against them because they have none of their own

A vampire? Really? How would they fit into the society you've created?

And I was just about to ask if there was some method to use another person's soul to fuel magic.

A Rogue would be what exactly?

A vampire is one of nastiest critters, and hardest to hunt and kill kinda the source of most of the cities troubles, ghouls, wraiths, abominations they create them from human souls. They are smart and almost impossible to discriminate from people. But not all are evil and they are the ONLY other creatures in the city that can teach the use of magic, so the ones that don't kill humans TEACH Rogues.

Not all Keeper's are as black and white either, but there are some that are...a bit over zealous thinking all un-naturals are evil

Huh. Well, I've got ideas bouncing around in my head, but I'm not sure if or how they'd work in this story.

I'm not that keen on the idea of breaking one's soul apart to fuel the magic, so I was leaning towards finding a way of using an opponent's soul against them. Then you mentioned vampires and I got an idea to have a vampire that's in a bit of turf war with other vampires, uses only souls from willing volunteers and/or people/things he's fighting, and possibly has a secret agreement of some sort with the king.

So, yeah, that's some of what's bouncing around at the moment.

the primary concept round using the soul is that its no different than using blood it heals regenerates its a well of power but using too much all at once means death or worse.

and Vamps are few and far between very rare

So, the soul replenishes itself?

And no vamp character. Gotcha.

Okay, a more solid idea is forming. I'll flesh it out and get back to ya with it.

And problems with or questions about this character, feel free to ask.

Name: John Baber
Nickname: The Bruising Anvil
Sex: M
Age: 35
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 190lbs
Build: Lean, well defined musculature, not bulky.
Hair color/style: Black, cut short, almost shaved
Eye color: Brown
Skin tone: Tan
Type: Ink
Element/Pet:

Weapon: Open finger/palm leather gloves with round metal studs on his hands, matching set of leather guards covering the top of his feet and shins

Reputation: A hard drinking brawler that loves a good fight, with the scars to prove it. Has a list of disciplinary citations as long as his arm, the bulk of which is for his bar fights. Has never used his power in any of the bar fights, nor has he killed anyone, unless an unnatural was involved. Unofficially, he’s the guy that is sent into an area when big trouble is expected, and trouble usually shows up shortly after he arrives. Officially, he’s just lucky that way.

Brief description: Intricate pattern of black lines of varying thickness tattooed from below his chin to his ankles, across his chest and back, and down his arms to the backs of his hands that give him a fierce appearance when fighting. These tattoos act as his Focus, allowing him to make his skin as hard as steel for short periods of time, usually long enough to finish a fight. Usually seen wearing a loose fitting tunic and trousers, but when fighting, just his trousers, the gloves and shin guards, a few bandages covering wounds from his last brawl, and his hard muscles underneath his tattoos are all that can be seen.

A quick question. Earlier you said that we're dealing with a modern city with gothic architecture, but later you said the most modern weapon we could have was a crossbow. Combine those two separate statements (gothic architecture and crossbows being most modern weapon), and I got the impression that we're dealing with a medieval city or time period.

Can you elaborate on that a bit more, i.e. time period, technology (not just weapons), etc.?

Picture what would happen if Vatican city had been cut off from the rest of the world for approx 500 years, most tech would've fallen apart been scavenged or thrown away most industry and expansion would grind to a halt.

The only other example I could compare it to would be if the pioneer village people and the Amish took over the world, they know the technology is there but see NO point in using it because they don't have the means, material, or the motivation to do anything other than survive.

Ah. So there's a chance to see some of the old tech laying around, such as barely recognizable husks of cars, the odd piece of machinery, etc.?

And the city has guards other than the Keepers, right? And they'd be decked out in outfits similar to the what the Swiss Guard of the Vatican wear for ceremonial purposes?

Oh, and is there a means of identification for Keepers, so that one Keeper can ID another, get the cooperation of lower level authorities, etc.?

1)yes there is ESPECIALLY outside city walls, most of it would've been dumped out there but not everything.

2)Yes, I'm debating on the colors and the general look but it would be something easily identifiable, prolly a typical red uniform complimented by armor the higher the rank more expensive looking the armor. The cities guard are also its soldiers, and police.

3)A platinum pendant, a celtic knot design with a reptillian eye-like jewel at its centre its color changes depending on what school they were taught,(four schools) Red for Inks, Blue for Scribes, Green for Elementals, and Yellow for Beastials.

I wonder if anyone else will want to join this story. We do need some representation from the opposite gender, which would be great.

Well, the only people I know of are either currently having Internet problems or don't visit Lit anymore...so, no, I don't know anyone. We'll just have to wait for someone to come along and express interest.

feel free to join, ask questions and invite friends

its just me an one other dude so far

the details are in this thread

Name: Silas Marathorn
Nickname:
Sex: Male
Age: 30
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 180
Build: Heavy
Hair colour/style: Close cropped black fading to salt and pepper.
Eye colour: Sky Blue
Skin tone: Tanned
Type: Elemental
Element/Pet: Wind/Air
Weapon: crossbow

Reputation and Brief description: Silas for all his life has struggled under the yolk of the establishment and bristled at the fetters of the Keepers. The irony of being part of the problem hasn't passed him. He knows it, hates it, yet pushes against the walls of tradition with out bringing undue attention to himself.

A lover of fine food and drink, Silas is an Epicurean who is proud of his expanding girth, a mute testament to the quantity and quality of food consumed.

Silas tirelessly works on his craft, extending his endurance to cast, working on forms and uses, crafting wind sculptures musically filling a room
.

Friends: Any and all are Silas' friends so long as they enjoy a meal together.

Well, at last we have some new interest. Should be interesting to see how the characters interact. Two in-your-face fighters and one long range spell slinger. Two lean, mean, fighting machines and one...err...not so lean and mean. :D

By the way, we've got to come up with a decent nickname for Silas. My character is nicknamed the Bruising Anvil because when he's using his power, it's like fighting an anvil that hits back. As for Bi's character, I'm willing to bet his nickname has something to do with the fact that he's combined with a hound and is rather hard to kill. ;)

As for Silas, I'd probably include something that was to do with his power, seeing as how that seems to be the precedent.

Is Silas a follower of Epicureanism or does he simply like to eat, drink, and be merry?
