Montana Dem has advice for the party

Former Governor Steve Bullock says the problem Dems face in rural America is:

“It’s never easy for Democrats to get elected in Montana, because Democrats here are running against not only the opponent on the ballot, but also, against conservative media’s — and at times, our own — typecast of the national Democratic brand: coastal, overly educated, elitist, judgmental, socialist, a bundle of identity groups and interests lacking any shared principles,” Bullock laments. “The problem isn’t the candidates we nominate. It’s the perception of the party we belong to.”

His solution:

We need to frame our policies, not in terms of grand ideological narratives, but around the material concerns of voters. Despite our differences and no matter where we live, we generally all want the same things: a decent job, a safe place to call home, good schools, clean air and water, and the promise of a better life for our kids and grandkids.

For me, that meant talking about Obamacare not as an entitlement, but as a way to save rural hospitals and keep local communities and small businesses afloat. It meant talking about expanding apprenticeships, not just lowering the costs of college. It meant framing public lands as a great equalizer and as a driver for small business. It meant talking about universal pre-K not as an abstract policy goal, but being essential for our children and for keeping parents in the work force. It meant talking about climate change not just as a crisis, but as an opportunity to create good jobs, preserve our outdoor heritage, and as a promise not to leave communities behind.

Sensible?

Like coporate owned media will ever emphasize the points the Democrat's make about their policies.

The corporate media loves to keep the culture wars going: It helps viewership and serves their goal of keeping the masses separated so the corporate class can maintain the status quo.

SAD!!!

Overlooking the fact that Bullock lost his last election (and if he'd won, we'd be free to ignore Joe Manchin or Krysten Sinema), his advice isn't bad, BUT I question whether the status quo he describes is what's really happening. Is it, or is it just what the SCLM always says about Democrats? Because that is not going to change, no matter how hard Democrats try to appeal to red state voters.

Also, anyone who uses the term "over-educated" instantly loses a lot of credibility with me. That's nothing but plain old anti-intellectualism.

Sorry. You can't make chicken soup from chicken shit. The Democratic party is fucking useless. How many elections against complete morons have been lost or stolen on their watch? How many Supreme court seats have been stolen on their watch? How many illegal wars have been started on their watch? How many war crimes have been committed and gone unpunished on their watch?

Even when Democrats have the White House and both Houses of Congress they still capitulate to Republicans. They are the party of surrender monkeys. They go on and on about how they are so much smarter than the knuckle dragging idiots in the Republican party yet they lose to them over and over.

Perhaps, but in terms of public perception in the countryside, it's a real problem.

In deep-red America, the white Christian god is king, figuratively and literally. Religious fundamentalism has shaped most of their belief systems. Systems built on a fundamentalist framework are not conducive to introspection, questioning, learning, or change. When you have a belief system built on fundamentalism, it isn’t open to outside criticism, especially by anyone not a member of your tribe and in a position of power. The problem isn’t that coastal elites don’t understand rural Americans. The problem is that rural America doesn’t understand itself and will never listen to anyone outside its bubble. It doesn’t matter how “understanding” you are, how well you listen, what language you use…if you are viewed as an outsider, your views will be automatically discounted. I’ve had hundreds of discussions with rural white Americans and whenever I present them any information that contradicts their entrenched beliefs, no matter how sound, how unquestionable, how obvious, they will not even entertain the possibility that it might be true. Their refusal is a result of the nature of their fundamentalist belief system and the fact that I’m the enemy because I’m an educated liberal.

At some point during the discussion, they will say, “That’s your education talking,” derogatorily, as a general dismissal of everything I said. They truly believe this is a legitimate response, because to them education is not to be trusted. Education is the enemy of fundamentalism because fundamentalism, by its very nature, is not built on facts. The fundamentalists I grew up around aren’t anti-education. They want their kids to know how to read and write. They are against quality, in-depth, broad, specialized education. Learning is only valued up to a certain point. Once it reaches the level where what you learn contradicts doctrine and fundamentalist arguments, it becomes dangerous. I watched a lot of my fellow students who were smart, stop their education the day they graduated high school. For most of the young ladies, getting married and having kids was more important than continuing their learning. For many of the young men, getting a college education was seen as unnecessary and a waste of time. For the few who did go to college, what they learned was still filtered through their fundamentalist belief systems. If something they were taught didn’t support a preconception, it would be ignored and forgotten the second it was no longer needed to pass an exam.

Exactly, Tester is a prime example. A one term senator who lied his way into office and then sold out his voters.

Tester is currently in his third term in the Senate, and he has nothing to do with the OP.

It's a sensible bit of dishonesty.

(D)'s aren't about those things, and even if they were convincing enough to consider us "dumbfuckistani" deplorable scum as anything other than sub-human filth that needs to be 'purged' from civilized society.

What are their actual real world policy solutions??

Shit on them, call them ugly names and then tax them into oblivion for the privilege of effectively being robbed by a bunch of big citiot snobs.

LOL..... gee... why doesn't rural America support (D)'eez more?? I wonder :D

Overeducated is actually a real thing and it's a reflection of the individual. They are working at a job beneath their education level. You have to be able to apply what you know in the real world. Either that, or you have a worthless degree

You're smarter than most of Red America if your degree is in the intersectionality of queer studies and basket weaving.

No you're not. You dug yourself into a mountain of debt for a degree no one will pay you a nickel for. If you're smart, you know you're better off going to trade school.

You're also broke and resentful red America is buying the burger you're flipping.

So? You've never been to a Starbucks where the baristas were not mentally superior to you.

I don't drink trash coffee.

If they are mentally superior to me then why are they crying about their wages and lack of economic success???

Why do they feel entitled to a chunk of MY labor/wealth???

They aren't superior. :)

Yes, absolutely. If Dems did this they would destroy the opposition.

But they won't cause the leadership is too fucking stupid. You must do 2 things....set a policy....and achieve it. No one cares how it is done as long as it is done. Biden has had one year to prove he could work both sides of the aisle. He failed. And still he keeps trying the same broken ways. You can not talk with a side that refuses to talk. So fuck them

A Govt that can't pass a budget is worthless. Continuing resolutions only pays bills already accrued. They are not a solution.

So you went to college to be a barista? What was the point of accumulating all that debt? Further proof that some degrees are useless.

There is thing called the military that disagrees with you, and while underpaid Teachers would also beg to differ with this bull crap you are posting. And to Goth you're only better off in Trade School until too many morons who don't understand supply and demand start listening to you and then the skill becomes pretty worthless.
