It's a joke for most. The majority of people have how many lovers in their lifetime? More then one. So that makes them serial polyamorous people, not monogamous individuals as they would have you believe. So what's the difference between loving more then one at one time, or doing it serially? The only difference is that in the first instance you're truthful with yourself, in the second you're using a mental slight of hand to convince yourself you're on the accepted moral track.

Monogamy is often championed by people with few options and opportunities as a way to exert power over someone else. Without the contract of monogamy- withholding sex would have absolutely no power over anyone.
True monogamy should be 100% voluntary and simply a matter of being into the other person and they into you. Monogamy should be a drive from within, a delight not a burden.
If it's a burden, get out. Do both of yourselves a favor.

Who's morals? Yours? Mine? His? Hers?
I think it has nothing to do with morals. I respect people who do not want a monogamous relationship, but when I have a S/O, I am monogamous. They are the only person I want to be with.
A polyamorous person has multiple lovers at one time. Monogamy isn't one lover ever, it's one at a time which is what most people do.
A social construct that shouldn't be assigned with such great intrinsic value. I 100% support everyone leading their lives in their preferred way, but a great number of monogamists tend to take the moral high ground aggressively putting others down. It's like fighting for acceptance of women being able to vote, freedom of religion, gay rights etc. all over again.
Not so much morality as practicality, mono-wise. Poly anything is great for freedom and fun. Strong Mono means a long-term partner, always there for you. That works.
No, you don't get to define words the way you want. Language doesn't work that way.But you have no problem going from one SO to another, as long as it's one at a time? I have friends that have been married and divorced three or four times. Wikipedia calls that serial monogamy. I call it serial polyandry. Having more then one lover, only separated by time isn't what I'd call monogamy. But then you get to define it your way and I mine.
I will admit I used the wrong word. They aren't serial polyamorous, they are serial polyandry. And as I said above I wouldn't consider monogamy having more then one wife or lover and justify it by separating them in time. All you have to do is look at the root words. mono- one, poly-many. Having three or four wives or lovers whether all at once or separated by time is still defined as many (poly). The ONLY difference is one variation is morally accepted by the majority of our society while the other by only a small minority.
But then as I also said above, on this subject we get to define it as we want.
