Monkey-shines

It was out there, believe me. And just because you've never seen it, it was and is still hypocrisy. Any black person who is in the least bit conservative in thinking is vilified not only by the liberal leaning media but by their own people no matter the level of their accomplishment. Hypocrisy.

How the hell is it hypocrisy if I didn't even know it fucking existed? Jumping to conclusions much?

It's an epidemic! SR's in the conclusion high hurdles. :D

There, there, I just know if you had seen it you wouldn't have liked it. I have faith in you. ;)

It sounds like it was just a convenient reason for you to name call.

Whatever. I don't have to prove a damn thing to you, or to anyone else.

Nope. I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

Funny thing, I'm of the same opinion. ;)

yeah, like the guy who steals from his own family is vilified.

Not so hypocritical.

I give up! Who are we talking about here? This thread's wandering all over the place. Why am I not surprised? ;)

I couldn't figure out Stella's post either. Perhaps she'll explain.

What the fuck is funny about appropriate? If some cartoonist sticks his ass out to poke fun at a public figure, so what?

Is racism funny? Not really, but the cartoonist or photoshoper has the right to do it.

Is is wrong? That's in the minds of each individually.

Oh! My! The Usual Suspects are definitely 'going Muslim' on us tonight!

I haven't seen the cartoon in question, so I'm not sure of the context, but the reason you don't portray a black as a monkey is the same reason that it's not acceptable to portray Irishmen as drunks or Italians as gangsters or Mexicans as lazy or Jews as having big noses. Portraying blacks as monkeys resurrects that whole mindset that saw racial and ethnic degradation as acceptable, and implies that you find it acceptable as well.

Note that you could portray a black as a drunk or an Irishman as having a big nose or a Jew as lazy, etc. because these don't evoke the hateful stereotypes that are so insulting to the people who have to live with them. Thus it was okay to portray Bush as a monkey.

In America, we consider it pretty much okay to insult a person based on their deeds. It's not okay to insult someone for their ethnic or racial background, though, factors over which they have no control. That's pretty much the definition of prejudice.

I never saw Condy Rice portrayed as a monkey, but who knows? Maybe it happened. Liberals can get away with such stuff, though, because it's pretty well known that liberals don't ascribe to the notion of racial disparity and don't accept racial stereotyping on principle. When the jibe comes from the right, however, from people whose stance on racial equality is already suspect, it looks bad. It's much more inappropriate.

ELLIOTT

Yet the local paper screams 'bloody murder' about the black high school graduation rate here (25%); 75% of whites graduate, so the school board are racists. The paper argues that blacks need different courses and different standards.

Blacks are America's Special Olympics Squad or our tender, fragile orchids.

I suspect our Usual Suspects are afraid the stereotypes are correct.

Wrong is wrong, whether it's Liberal or Conservative. I'd say that just as many Liberals are racist as Conservatives are not, but stereotyping has distorted that reality beyond all recognition. Ascribing 'racisim' to anything and everything that involves people of color had devalued that currency to virtual worthlessness; Much as the charges of 'sexisim', 'gay bashing' and 'homophobia' have been used reductio et absurdum.

I always thought that the "Chimp" cartoons were showing "W's" inner monkey. I didn't think they were racist.

I haven't seen the MO cartoon so I have no opinion on it, other than it is a sad day when our cartoonists can't find a politician to mock.

Between the "Blue Dogs" and Repugnicans, Washington is a target rich environment. :D

that's what stereotyping has always done. And stereotyping has always been the tool of the majority. Poor baby, now that conservatives have been stereotyped as stereotypers!Dunno how that happened...

I'd say that's easy for you to say-- you are white, male, and straight.

So how the fuck would you know what impinges people of color, gay folk, or women?

I like it! EXPRESS YOUR INNER CHIMP! I need to stencil it on my baseball bat.

Every night, beside my bed, I get on my knees and thank Jesus that I'm white, male, and straight.

Congratulations on having something to be thankful for. :)

Ohhh...now I get it. "Nobody knows the trouble I've seen...nobody knows my sorrow." Who could possibly know the misery of blacks, browns, gays and women except someone like you, the essence of compassion? Certainly not a dumb ol' straight, white male like me. Why I'm the oppressor, the 'Man', the slave owner, the enemy.

What colossal arrogance! You appear on these threads with an attitude and a chip on your shoulder looking to be offended, so it's no wonder you usually are. Who appointed you the conscience of the AH? Maybe if you weren't so damn antagonistic you'd get your message of 'tolerance' across...but instead you're excessively intolerant which makes you no better than those you criticize.

Climb down off your high horse and mingle with us lesser beings, you might be surprised how pleasant we can be. Tilting at windmills didn't work for Don Quixote and it's not working for you either. ;)
