I tried writing, but I'm just not in the zone. No matter which story I tried to work on, no matter what music I played, it wasn't coming to me.

Worse, I discovered I'm out of absinthe. :/

So I'm watching screen test videos of Ann-Margret in 1961 (there might be a minor crush involved), singing Bill Bailey and Mack The Knife.

Anyone have any useful advice for smashing through the block and getting your writing groove on? To my distress, the gf is not available this morning to induce a chemical change.

If I'm writing erotica I put a busty cam girl in the background.

My experience is that the harder I try the less I succeed. My muse is only working on a voluntary basis.

Try doing something different. The laundry, mopping the floor, repairing that kitchen cupboard your gf keeps complaining about... Maybe your muse takes pity with you. If not, at least your gf will be happy when she returns...

read through some of your completed stories. that always spurs me to think what i might have done differently, how i would re-write certain sections, how i might have changed the plot. before i know it, i'm working on a new story because i'm in the zone.

Yep. Do something mindless. Stop thinking about writing. Get away from the computer (or whatever device you use). Take a walk or wander through a store.

It clears the brain of excess crap so you have space for the story again.

Go do something else. You must have a hobby, other than writing no?
Not getting into the mood is usually an indication that you mind wants to do something else, so give it something else. Go play a game; go finish that ship in the bottle; go paint your new mecha; go watch the new Netflix series; go take a stroll through the neighbourhood; it doesn't matter what you do, as long as it's able to get you invested into something else. You can't be focused on writing all day, every day. Everyone needs a break. So why not put that into something you also like? It'll allow you to feel refreshed and then you can see what your options are.

Writer's block is nothing but your mind telling you it needs a little vacation. Forcing yourself through it is kind of like pushing more work onto an overworked employee, it'll only make things worse.

I solved the Monday morning writer's block long ago. Skip Mondays and start on Tuesday. Problem solved. :)

Sorry, no advice to offer. I'm partial to Ann-Margret myself. Therefore, my advice would be undeniably biased in that sense.

If it matters, Ann-Margret is alive and kicking at 75. She's still an active entertainer.
