The story started off very harsh and violent I don't believe they would be able to come up with a something so simple if they wanted to keep the mother/ lover roles separate.

It would be much more believable if they go through a period of compromise where they come up with rules together that way they both get something out of it but the roles have still changed. This would also give them more time to work out the depth of pleasure they are both getting from the new situation while leaving a bath for them to grow either together or add more rules later.
