I've never read of it in any how to write book but much of what I write exists other places. That is, I steal most of what I write. And most of what I write are 'modules' connected by transitions. I mean, why re-invent the wheel? Its how engineers write fiction. Psychotherapists steal from each other, and think nothing of it.
What are modules?
In PSYCHO Robert Bloch wrote a scene where Norman Bates fucking loses it big time with Miriam. He invited her to the house for coffee and a bologna sandwich. There she said something mildly critical of his ma, and he went nutso. I cant imagine how to improve on it. So I don't waste time trying. It goes in a file full of similar. depictions. Where I need it I make alterations for best fit.
Or this jewel I partially stole from Raymond Chandler, SHE WAS AS PRIVATE AS FIRST CLASS MAIL, AND AS EXCLUSIVE AS THE CORNER MAILBOX. You could phrase it, HE WAS AS PRIVATE AS A MEDICAL CHART, AND AS EXCLUSIVE AS A FILE CABINET.
