Idea...

Every week and then moving to perhaps every other week I will choose a film for myself and anyone interested to rent and be discussed in this thread. I'd hope for a loose conversation without the film school babble @ rotten tomatoes and other online venues. Exploring undervalued and thought provoking works as well as whatever stikes our fancy.

If anyone actually wants to check this out please make suggestions for the next film. I would prefer to avoid the hipster films as well as those that are often talked about.

For the first attempt I was considering either The Manchurian Candidate or Crash. I have seen both films but not in several years. Crash is too abvious a choice for this location so its The Manchurian Candidate to start with.

I'd propose open thoughts on next Wednesday night for those who have time and desire to see the film.

Chime in if you're game.

... and to think I was going to initiate a chronlogical survey of Kurosawa's work with Mifune.

It is an interesting idea.

However, I live in a two bit town and am not likely to be able to find many movies.

What about selecting something that is being aired on television?

I live in a town that is far smaller than yours. I'm sure. I rent videos in the town I work in so I guess I can work it out.

I don't watch TV, sorry.

Baby, can you find something less boring?

How about Rose spread eagle...........ohhhhhh ummmmmmmmm that's a whole other movie........;) :p

Glad to have you aboard April-wine. Nive av, btw.

Rose, make a suggestion for next week and we will see what we can do to work with your finicky taste.

I like the idea as well, but I too live in a tiny town with out a national video chain or even a small video store that doesn' have the Earnest movies on reserve every night. Maybe we could pick something a little more acsessable to everyone.

Damn. I'd love to watch The Seventh Samurai or Kagemusha again.

You should have gone with Kurosawa, you see?

Seriously, I now have it on good authority that The Manchurian Candidate is an excellent psychological thriller and worth my effort to sit through. I hadn't seen it therefore I rendered it unworthy.

Yeah, I'm arrogant like that. Let's do it!

The Manchurian Candidate is among my favorite movies of all time.

I'll bite too - but is there some sort of schedule that I missed? Do we have till the end of the weekend? How do you want to do this, oh modest one??

Nigel

The guy I work for has a son who is in film making. He is going to let me veiw the raw cut of "Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter."

I can't fucking wait.

Sounds interesting.
I'm in.

Also, i don't watch much TV and don't have anything past basic cable (for my kids). I'd rather not do this from TV movies if i get a vote, if that's still an issue.

And, off topic, i saw both Y Tu Mama, Tambien? last night and World Traveller. Both were...sobering. Excellent movies but really sobering. Maybe a little too much for someone already on the depressed side, but, well, definitely good movies. Go see them both, preferably on different days.

Manchurian Candidate

Its a classic, I think one of Angela Landsbury's greatest roles. I always thoguht that it was too paranoid and inflamatory, but after September eleventh, I realize stranger things have happened. I would love to join this film club, and for all of you who haven't seen it, go rent it and enjoy. Some of it may seem cheesy but it is an incredible movie. "Crash" is also a great movie, and as my favorite director is Kurosawa, I have no problem discussing that vein either.

Like Cym, I have no TV so as an extension of this thread I cannot participate in any TV based program.

I knew I liked Laurel for a reason. If you have not seen Ran then you should. Much of the same costumes were used as in Kagemusha and in fact Kurosawa had planned Ran while finishing Kagemusha, which he considered a lesser work.

Way to go Rose, open mouth; insert foot. You'll come to Like The Manchurian Candidate, especially as an older film and what it was striving for.

As Nigel asks... I would suggest everyone try to see the film by Wednesday of next week and we can begin talking about it that evening, say around 6pm EST. THe discussion can move from there at its own pace.

My movie choices might not be the most appealing so any ideas for movie #2 are welcome.

To those who do not have easy access to videos/DVDs... you can keep an eye on what film is up for viewing or make a suggestion about one you do have available and become involved.

Thanks for jumping in. This could prove to be cool shit.

Ah, well...

The tape I rented was of awful quality so i hesitated to sink two hours time into it but I did make a copy which I have since neglected to watch due to lack of free time. I'll post about the film this weekend if anyone is still interested.

Feel free to open discussion of it or the next film if the urge strikes.

I rented a copy, too, then had an emergency with my daughter pop up and have spent a lot of time on that. I had to take the tape back, unwatched. Sorry.

Same movie, still?

Damed good idea Mouse... I'm in... I haven't seen candidate yet so it will be great as a starter...

If I am not the only when then perhaps we can shoot for Sunday.

Good to have you aboard kiwi. You'll enjoy the film.
