Saudi judge condemns 'immoral TV'

The most senior judge in Saudi Arabia has said it is permissible to kill the owners of satellite TV channels which broadcast immoral programmes.

Sheikh Salih Ibn al-Luhaydan said some "evil" entertainment programmes aired by the channels promoted debauchery.

Dozens of satellite television channels broadcast across the Middle East, where they are watched by millions of Arabs every day.

The judge made the comments on a state radio programme.

He was speaking in response to a listener who asked his opinion on the airing of programmes featuring scantily-dressed women during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

"There is no doubt that these programmes are a great evil, and the owners of these channels are as guilty as those who watch them," said the sheikh.

"It is legitimate to kill those who call for corruption if their evil can not be stopped by other penalties."

Given his position as the country's most senior judge, the sheikh's views can not be easily dismissed, says BBC Arab affairs analyst, Magdi Abdelhadi.

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry... I'm a reasonable guy, except with arseholes, and I'm tolerent of others beliefs... to a point. I presume each of us will be 'legitimate targets' once the Judge gets around to condeming erotica/porn.

No, however draconian the Sheikh's view is, they only apply to Saudi's. We're outside the pale, thus unaffected. Now in the jihadi view, we all get killed no matter what we do so just shoot first and don't bother asking any questions. The Sheikh, however strict his interpretation of the Koran might be, is no jihadi.

I can see this happening in the US, and I'm not kidding. With the slippery slope we're on? Uh huh.

Erotic literature is growing to be big business, so it should really impact the US though I see only too clearly where you are coming from (no pun intended :D)

The kind of 'demonisation' implicit in the sheikh's statement is nothing new, just extremely disappointing. It objectifies the religious divide using morality as an excuse... and it should be remembered this is the chief legal officer of Saudi making the comments. Accepting moral and religious difference between cultures is a first step powermongers seem reluctant to take.

It is why I am so frustrated by the 'west', we try hard to balance our relationships with other cultures, too hard as the net result only appears a stepping process in undermining our own culture. Therte is nothing divine about culture, it is what the majority make it. It has always been so; and whilst I wouldn't want to live in a Muslim society - particularly because of their treatment of women and minorities - I'm happy to share the world up to the point where they threaten my culture. Erotica co-exists alongside mainstream fiction (and film), it is an individual choice within legally defined boundaries, which is how it should remain.

Google Taqiyya and see how this kind of hypocrisy is an integral part of Islamic culture. Nothing new about it. It's why they attacked us. Not because our foreign policy made them mad, because they, well, hate our freedoms. The foreign policy red herring is just something convenient to play into the hands of America's existing insurgents (i.e. the Democratic Party :D) to gain their allegiance and further weaken their enemy.
