This may not be the best place to post this- but what is? I'm working on some projects that attempt to blend writing and art but am having trouble finding the right mix. My basic notion is this: Comics are great BUT- you miss most of the power of language, and any comic with anything like an actual idea in it ends up having lots of really boring talking-heads shots, and in general the artist (who happens to be me in this instance) ends up drawing lots of panels of pretty boring, static crap in order to support the story. On the other hand, serial art is very powerful for depicting action, visual style, showing unusual environments, and, of course, sexual arousing imagery. The difficulty is in making transitions from one format to another in a smooth and sensible fashion. The point is NOT to have static illustrations to an on-going text stream, NOR to have two complete parallel streams, but to have text and graphics weave in and out, each carrying the story where they can do the most good. If anyone knows of any relatively successful examples of this, I'd appreciate some links or titles. Thanks!

Thanks for the link. I do like the format, but it's not what I'm trying to do. I'm working on something where the text and graphics are fully intertwined.

Try any of the Neil Gaiman graphic novels. He works with fabulous artists. Neil and his illustrators meld the graphs, the dialog and action seamlessly. Many of the graphic novels/comics that I have read I could skip the illustrations almost completely because they were, as you say, talking heads. To do this with any of Gaiman's works causes the reader to loose layers of meaning.

His most prolific work are the Sandman series. My favorite is "The Tale of Despair" from Sandman #12, Endless Nights. It's indescribable.

Thanks, Pagrl. I've seen a couple of Sandman issues- quite a long time ago, though. That might be closer to what I'm looking for, I'll have find some and refresh my memory.
