This went live on Tuesday, 10/12. Already, I have four readers who put it on their favorites list, and it has over 2000 hits; by contrast, a Romance story I posted last September is still in the 1800-hit range.

The irony? It is, so far, my lowest-voted story, at 3.73. I guess NC/R is a pretty tough crowd; there is, after all, no BDSM or any other such, just a woman wearing a man down, one sex act at a time -- so it's pretty vanilla for that category. (I had some other ideas for this same story, but they didn't fit with the 18+ rule, so they had to go.)

As I said on another thread, I'm just doing what we all do -- run stories up a flagpole and hope someone salutes, and with more than one finger.

This has been no complaint, simply a report on the curious juxtaposition this story has presented.

Thanks, everyone.

My NC/R stories generally have lower ratings than my others. I think, also, NC/R readers prefer to see men dominating and women submitting, without necessarily any BDSM stuff.

Different categories have their own readerships, so views can vary wildly.

My fortunes appear to be turning ... I'm at a 4.15/13, and five people have favorited it (which for me,. is pretty awesome). In other words, it's not in my basement anymore.

My contest story is in NC/R. Its only the second time I've posted there, and last time was 10 years ago.
I have a friend who posts in that category here and another site on a regular basis and his description of the readers seems spot on.

There is a lot of conflict with that readership. I think even more than taboo, it has a large faction of "wow, that turned me on, but now I'm upset that it did" readers. That's why the scores tend to be lower than a lot of categories and I see comments telling me the guy was disgusting, people being treated that way is wrong

Sorry, I didn't know there were gentlemen and good guys forcing women into sex in that category, I'll have to do more research next time as to what kind of person blackmails another into sex. Taboo on the other hand, because most stories tend to be fun fantasy doesn't see as much conflict, but you do get the "This is sick" person that you wonder what they're doing there in the first place

So I think that's a large part of what makes it a tough category to do well in. There's readers who realize what category they're in and its because they enjoy the fantasy-that being the key word-and the ones who, like in LW, seem to have a hard time seeing this as fiction. Worth noting I can tell by the negative comments they read the story. Its 7 pages, if you were that disgusted you would have stopped reading(one person said they did so okay, I'll give that one some credence) so they went through, liked it, then took it out on me that they did.

My latest comment is the best, and I'm posting it here because it makes the point of this post and the general points I'm discussing here as far as why are you reading and knowing real events from fiction.

Looking at other comments it is easy to see how a story like this polarises readers. As a written piece this is as good as anything LC68 has submitted its structure, build up & conclusion are well crafted. Some find the subject matter a turn off & of course they are entitled to their view I agree in the real world treating anyone male, female, trans or of any other preferred sex description is wrong. However, in writing in a fantasy realm there has to be a place to accommodate and express these types of sexual encounters in the context of art and it is up to the readers to separate the fictional setting from what is not acceptable in a real world setting. At the end of the day readers offended by this work have made the choice to look at this work knowing it is listed under the category “non consensual”. It is there poor choice to read this piece and find it offensive and not the writer’s treatment of a situation that is really the consideration.

I've found that when a story does poorly, it probably isn't the readers' fault.

I have one story in NC/R. It's rating is in the low-end of my usual range and it's one of my least-viewed stories. It has just one comment. I can't blame the NC/R readers for any of that, because:

It came out on a day with 184 other new stories, so it was buried on the New list. NC/R stories are usually on the bottom of the New list anyway, so that made the story invisible.

I split it in two parts and asked Laurel to publish them both on the same day. I won't do that again. Part 1 came out "below the fold" in the NC/R hub, so readers had to expand the list just to see it. Part 2 was the last entry on the first page. Not many people start reading a story with Part 2.

It had my usual problem with a title and short description that didn't pull readers in.

The biggest problem was that it probably shouldn't have been written. It was a romance with a purely non-consensual startup, and it had rough sex throughout. NC/R readers might have liked Part 1, but then rolled their eyes at Part 2. Romance readers might have liked Part 2 -- if they ever got there -- except for that rough sex thing.

To make it worse, I wrote complicated, damaged characters. He was an asshole and she could be a bitch. So what if she struggles up from having nothing? So what if he learns to love her? Not that many people would like them enough to even care.

I really enjoyed writing the story, and I'd do it again. My only regret is that I didn't stick the landing. As far as its success or failure is concerned, I'll take responsibility.

Hybrid stories are always an issue. I like the site has categories so people can pretty much decide where they can find what they like and avoid what they don't. But then the issue is people getting ticked off when there's some peanut butter in their chocolate.

In that sense I'm not sure I agree its the writer's fault because they had the nerve to write a more complex and serious story that deals with some gritty reality as yours did.

I'm glad you said you were still happy you wrote it, because if we as authors start bending the knee to make sure every thing is a cookie cutter example of what fits in every category then we're not really truly writing.

One thing I'm surprised about is you submitted both at once. There's no way you can trust them to get it right, and there's always a chance they boot the first one and there's two hanging all by itself.

The story I was mentioning is straight up where it belongs and the score isn't bad for the category, if it stays around where it is the final sweep may net me a low Red H. The comments do have me scratching my head, complaining of scummy behavior in a category that is pretty much based on that.

But it is unfamiliar to me being my second attempt in 12 years there, and I'm sure my last. I wanted to revisit categories I hadn't attempted in some time before I retire from writing here which is contingent on when I hit the last of the three goals on my bucket list.

Hey, thanks for your kind words and "you're not alone" encouragement. I had heard that NC/R is a tough crowd, and from where I sit now, I can't call myself dissatisfied.

BTW I didn't mention that the reason for the below four score is its femdom. NC/R and sadly BDSM now, is only happy with women having it put to them. In the future if you have a woman on top story, fetish is where you want to go, they're a lot more open to femdom over there.

NC/R might be a tough crowd, though loving wives is brutal. People love to read and apparently hate it every step of the way!

You can't write about them damn uppity women, you should know that. Keep them barefoot, in the kitchen, and with their belly swollen up with their next baby already. ;) women dominating men, what will you think of next?

Only way I'd write that is if she's pregnant from another man....heh

"Audiences know what to expect, and that is all they are prepared to believe in."
-The Player, 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead' by Tom Stoppard

I've written some "formula" stories that are sitting north of 4.8 because I gave the audience exactly what they expected. But I much prefer "my" more complex tales with what I consider to be more real, fleshed out, complex characters. I just put them in the catalog under different pen-names.

(With apologies to the man from Duluth)
"Gabe said, 'Where can I get my erotic literary fix?'
I said, 'Out on Highway 66'"

Dylan wrote Highway 61 Revisited in the style of Blues legend Robert Johnson who as the story goes sold his soul to the devil at the Crossroads. (Of US 61 and 49 in the Mississippi Delta...) Having already sold my soul to Gabe for a life of sexual bliss, ole Beelzebub-- who doesn't take American Express-- was unwilling to make my prose come close to the equal of Mr. Johnson's guitar.

Millie ... my guess is to keep that category of readers happy would be to have the Supreme Court overthrow that damn Constitutional rights article for barefoot and PG gals to vote or get beyond a fifth-grade education ... like some other advanced cultures do. Then to appease them, make sure everyone has a Singer Sewing Machine at home to keep them preoccupied with making their own dresses - no pants, for sure. LOL🤭

I have a story in NC/Reluctance pending about a girl getting the short end of the stick and then turning the tables in the end on those men who did her wrong - now you just got to know that is going to catch a lot of sh*t in the scores and comments when it posts!
Ah, men. Fuck 'em.
Hope that's done without malice. :nana:
