"Dr. Brooks?" an elderly man called out, his feet stepping over a few pieces of unearthed rocks. The excavation site had turned into a mine field, large slabs of stone and equipment covering most of the area. Off in the distance a few tents could be seen, housing even more equipment and even more rocks. Several months ago a research team of archaeologists had been clued in to the possible existence of an underground cathedral, and after receiving permission from the French government, were able to start their excavation.
"Dr. Brooks?" the old man once again called out, his dull-grey eyes peering through his glasses to see if he could find her. He wiped some sweat off his brow, for the midday sun was ruthless and unforgiving to anyone not accustomed to its intense heat.
"I'm sorry but this is a restricted area." a young woman said as she came up behind him. She was wearing a sleeveless shirt and khaki shorts, dirt covering most of her body, from her knee caps to her arms and parts of her face and neck. Josephine Brooks brought her hand up to her head and removed her ball cap, setting her hat down on a large rock.
"I understand. But I was hoping I could have a word with you. It's of vital importance to your research." he responded. Josephine noted that he was carrying a briefcase, his hands tightly gripping the handle. She narrowed her eyes, as if deciding whether or not he was worth her time.
"Alright. My tents just over there." she finally said, her head nodding in its direction. It was a short walk over, and Josephine set her equipment down on the table once they were inside. A few chairs lined the inside of the tent, but were covered with papers and other various items. Finding no place to sit the elderly man simply stood on his feet, still holding his briefcase for dear life.
"As you can see I'm pretty busy. So this had better be good." she said sternly, annoyed at the fact that she had been peeled away from her research to entertain this old man.
"I must apologize for this intrusion,"
"Please get on with it." Dr. Brooks spoke rudely.
"I represent a corporation, the ITC."
Josephine had heard of them, and was none to thrilled with their business practices. The International Technology Corporation was well known for its ruthless and unethical practices in dealing with... lesser organizations.
"Let me guess. ITC wants to take over the dig?"
"No, actually. Although the board members are interested in this site, they don't want to take over the operation you have set up."
"So then why are you bothering me?" she asked.
Instead of receiving a formal reply, however, Josephine watched as he set his briefcase down and opened it up. Flicking the locks to the side the old man pulled out a small envelope and handed it over to her.
"Please, read that at your most earliest convenience." he said.
