I watched & taped it for my sweetie. I also was a bit disappointed, but making a book into a movie is always an iffy process. The book is wonderful & I am just glad to have something different to watch-summer time television sucks big time. After Part 2 airs tonight, it is back to AMC & TCM for me.
The author of the book is Marion Zimmer Bradley, and it's about the best thing of hers I've read. A wonderful book.
As for the show--it was a beautiful thing to see. The setting, the scenery, the costumes, the hair--someone paid an awful lot of attention to detail. Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous.
But the dialogue--what, did they spend all the money on the set and costumes and actors, and none on the writers? Please, even I could have done better than that.
I wish I could have seen the show first and read the book later. The book's always better.
It is one of my favorite books and I, too, was a bit disappointed.
Granted, I tried not to have high expectations - the book is inevitably better than any movie - and there was no way they could put everything from the book into the movie but... so much of what made the book GREAT was missing from the movie. The movie seemed like not much more than a narrative of events, moving quickly from one to another. It is entirely missing the characterization and motivation for why the characters act the way they did.
Also - it does seem that they have watered down the major aspect of the book - the telling of this story from the woman's point of view. Its there, but not as strong.
They left out the most important part of Morgaine's childhood - her upbringing on Avalon - they showed some events, mainly it seems to throw in a couple of special affects - but the friendships and teachers and training and so much more that went into making her a priestess - all missing.
Having said that - I still enjoyed it - it wasn't bad... but it could have been so much better. Hopefully tonight will improve a bit.
What did everyone think about Part 2? I was disappointed, but expected to be. This is a hard story to put into just 4 hours. Production values, costumes, effects were very good, but story was changed way too much from what I remember the last time I read the book. I guess it is time to pull it out & read it again. I love the book, it is a great escape read for me. I have "The Forest House" & "Lady of Avalon", they are all wonderful.
I liked it a lot, though I haven't read the book. I could tell that they skipped over a lot though. It just felt rushed.
IMHO, most mini-series have that feel to them. The books they are based on are 800 pages thick! Imagine if they were to do a mini-series off of Atlas Shrugged! It would last 10 nights and they would have to skip over half of it.
Gosh I am so glad someone brought this up...I was disappointed too. I think there was soooo much potential in the book...but as was mentioned above, making a book into a movie is often disasterous.
I agree that it was was visually beautiful however...
Yep, visually gorgeous. Perfect setting, everything very well done, except for the story/writing/dialogue, which at times was kinda stilted, over simplistic. But yeah, kinda hard to adapt a book and do it well.
I thought casting of the women was perfect. Julianna Marguiles was just right for Morgaine--even looks like the cover of the book that was printed in 1982. (The rolling of the eyes reaction she gave to Gwynyfar(sp?) in part 1 was priceless!)
And I do believe Angelica Huston was the prettiest I've ever seen her.
The guys--eh, it's hard to cast a young actor, then try to make him "age" convincingly.
It just makes me wonder sometimes, if they make the writers read the book before scripting it.
