It appears that the Mississippi is at flood stage for much of its length. Memphis has flooding and New Orleans is at least close to another flood.

AH Mississippians, please check in!

It's tense here, but we have been assured the levee will hold.

There's been constant flood warnings for one or two low points along the Mississippi here in Minnesota for 1-2 months, but I don't think anything devastating has happened.

Best wishes. The newspapers say that it's the worst flooding since 1927.

If indeed the flooding is equal to 1927, then it is a Class-A disaster. There was a great book (I forget the name) about the 1927 floods, and they were horrendous, especially around the Yazoo area of Mississippi. I found this snippet on the Internet just now: "Two hundred fourteen people lost their lives in the April flood. Six hundred thirty seven thousand were driven from their homes."

The levee system in Mississippi is holding for now but it has never been tested like this before, officials said.

"Compared to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 this flood is going to be a lot nastier," said Marty Pope, senior hydrologist for the National Weather Service in Jackson, Miss.

The river is predicted to crest at 64.5 feet on May 17 in the Vicksburg, Miss. area. Vicksburg has a flood stage of 48 feet, which means the river will crest more than 16 feet above normal, according to flood experts at the National Weather Service.

The flood waters will reach more than a foot above the Yazoo Backwater Levee near Yazoo City, Miss. and this will flood thousands of acres of farmland, said Pope.
