MC is a doctor that is on call. His ex wife “traded up.” In the story he is at a small house because a young girl was being babysat when the person watching her takes ill (I think it was her grandmother, but I’m not certain). After she goes to the hospital, there is no one to watch the girl so the MC stays to keep an eye on her. They fall asleep cuddling. Mom comes home and attacks the MC not knowing who he is or why he’s cuddling her daughter. Story shifts to later - we’re at reception/party at a mansion belonging to a countess. We meet the ex and her new husband who is of questionable character. He’s desperate for his business. They see the ex’s daughter with a similar aged girl and talk to her. The girl is the same one from the first scene and her mom is the countess, and she and the MC are now together. Ex did not trade up - MC did
