On a wintery day in UK - I'm trying to write, well edit and I keep growing distracted by my current reading material 'Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow' by Peter Hoeg.

Anyone else read / reading this?

I've rarely come across a book that makes me consider the structure of the writing as this book does. It explores relationship almost tangentially, sneek glimpses of the shoulder of the narrator (female) as if she can't quite reconcile herself to her emotions.

i saw the movie and it was fine. very much off the beaten track, surprising, and moving. :rose:

ditto here, movie only... although now I'm going to have to go get the book!

(like I don't have enough in my to-read pile!) :p

Here's something to induce you to read the book - they could never do this in the movie:

'Standing in the middle of the bedroom, we take off each other's clothes.

He has a light fumbling brutality, which several times makes me think that this time it'll cost me my sanity. In our dawning, mutual intimacy, I induce him to open the little slit in the head of his penis so I can put my clitoris inside and fuck him.'

That proves to me that I haven't read the book, I would never have forgotten that passage!
Wish they could have done it in the movie...

I read the book several years ago. You've brought to mind the moment I read that bit, one of the most thrilling phrases I've ever read. I recall the entire pleasure of the book, the characters, the emotions, the betrayals, the little boy. The film hardly captured the thrill of the read. Glad you found it, Mr. Lyte.

Damn, that's sexy.

Yeah, I remember that part. I'll have to give the book another read.

Ah, one of my home country's main exports!

Actually, I recommend Mr. Høeg's earlier works, The History of Danish Dreams and Tales of the Night. Very weird and original.

I found Smilla well-written, but somehow disappointing. Plot nicked from an early X-files episode, overloaded with nautical terms and ending not with a bang, but a whimper.

The movie was harshly crtitiqued. And since it was directed by fellow unbearable Dane Bille August, I've carefully avoided it.

Everyone remembers the clit-fucking part, though. Oh, well, it takes all sorts...

I loved this book! Sex scenes withstanding I absolutely loved the descriptions of the ice and snow - they have stayed with me!

That book is still on my to-read list. You just made me bump it up a few spots :)
