During her first year of college, 22 year old Rebecca Gillian got to fulfill a dream she had been unable able to during high school, studying abroad. Well, she had to wait till her second year of college to actually be able to do so, but that was beside the point. It took a little bit of work to find the program within her chosen college, but she was able to join the cultural exchange study program. Her country of choice was Japan, where she landed in an all women's university nestled in the heart of Shinjuku.
The sponsor family who decided to host her and give her a place to stay was a newly married couple living only three miles from the university. Rebecca arrived in-country the weekend before classes began. However due to work, Mr. Song, had to travel aboard for a few days. This left the two women alone to get to know one another and bond some, including shopping for school supplies and the school uniform.
Rebecca had always been a good girl in school and life in general. She had a small circle of friends back in the States and was looking forward to making new ones here in Japan. She was very studious and constantly making good grades, thought she was never the top of the class. Most of the time she was able to study with only a minimum amount of effort to be able to maintain her studies.
When the first day of university started, she was very excited to get started. After being introduced to her new classmates, she had been assigned to one of the desks closet to the windows. As it was normally done, it was a handful of teachers who rotated through to teach the different classes while the students stayed together. Though she had many chances to get to know her classmates, her excitement at the newness of everything left her a bit shy. When the final bell rang for the day, it suddenly hit her on how much of the day she had actually wasted in trying to acclimate herself.
However it seemed she had another chance to try and make new friends as the after school clubs were started today. There were several to choose from, and she could switch out if she didn't like the one she picked, if she understood correctly. She wasn't really interested in any of the sports club, leaving her with the other types of activities. After perusing the list of left over clubs, she finally decided on the science club.
The science club was being held in a classroom only a few doors down from the nurse's office. The location had been chosen just in case there was some sort of accident and a student was needed to be rushed to the infirmary for treatment. The layout of the classroom was four long island counters lengthwise from the front of the classroom to the back. Each island had a large sink in the center of it with running hot and cold water. Various size beakers and a bunsen burner were on each counter, with a working gas nozzle for the burners. A closet in the back held the various chemicals used for any experiments.
Rebecca stood outside the science room for a few moments, her books held against her chest as she tried to calm herself. This was her first day and she didn't want to make a fool of herself. She brought her breathing under control before sliding the door open and stepping inside.
Only a handful of other students were already inside, chatting among themselves. The teacher in charge of the club wasn't present at the moment, so Rebecca walked right on in. There was only woman who appeared to be by herself, mixing together some chemicals already. As the red head noted, the young woman mixed the chemicals was there only at her counter, so that seemed to be the one to be friend.
Rebecca moved to stand behind the woman's counter, setting her books down carefully away from anything dangerous.
"Hi there. I hope I'm not interrupting you, but I am new here. My name is Rebecca."
