Misogyny - should it be a hate crime?

I originally put this thread on a board on which there have, from time to time, been misogynistic comments and suggestions posted about actual or fantasised behaviour. The question was asked in connection with such posts, not as a general political question.

There's is plenty of evidence, particularly online, that misogyny is alive and thriving and that women are abused simply for being women. How the definition can be brought to bear for specific cases of street crimes etc I'm not sure, because I don't know much about that legal process.
In the end, as the report concludes, it is about women feeling they are safer and do have recourse to the law when they run across an asshole that's needs their leash shortened.

But there's nothing like a thread about misogyny to have men squealing like stuck pigs that It Doesn't Exist. Not All Men of course

Is there?

I read a similar statement in the Grauniad recently. On a serious analysis of the 'evidence' they cited one would have to conclude they were full of shit and were really trying to avoid valid criticism by mislabeling it and attempting to stigmatise any critics of their more inane hacks.

No, it shouldn't be a hate crime.
Being misogynistic doesn't necessarily mean the person hates women.

1.Not my experience.
At work for example, I noticed that employees, women in particular were far more likely to be bullied by women than by men. The mean girl syndrome.

In saying that, it might well be that the environments that I was placed in or gravitated towards were in that line. And you might possibly have had different experiences than I had.

2.But as far as Literotica is concerned, the OP is right. This being a porn board, it's bound to attract both regular people, as well as misogynists who either hate or objectify women.

I noticed a few of them: some more subtle than others.
The irony being that the poster who was labelled by some as being one of the most misogynistic posters: LJ , (and despite his often over -the top rhetoric about women), treated female posters with utmost respect.

Suffering from misogny but not expressing it in word or deed is not a crime.

Practising misogny by belittling or abusing women is the act of an asshole but whether it is a crime depends on the severity of the act.

Women can recognise assholes. They can be assholes themselves.

But they shouldn't suffer discrimination or abuse just because they are women (and the reverse is true too - misandry exists).

The voice of reason .

Define misogyny.....

Are we going with a textbook version, the legal version or the "anything that offends any woman in any way" 3rd wave SJW nutbag version?

FUCK GIRLS is the motto of my International Brotherhood of Assholes and Misogynists. KNOCK THEM UP, NOT DOWN

I'm being blunt here, but I hope that I'm not being disrespectful, since you never were towards me:
But when are you going to drop this act?.

Indeed, you behaved rudely a few times towards a few female Litsters and you made some unacceptable misogynistic comments, like in your last vanity threads.

But by the same token, I also saw you stand up for several female posters (including myself) who were being harassed or attacked by real misogynists.

That shows that you can behave like (for lack of a proper word) a jerk at times, like a lot of men do (but behind women's backs, tho)
But a real misogynist is consistent and doesn't act overall in the manner in which you do.

If it ever becomes a crime the Loving Wives category on story side will finally be safe to write in because all the trolls over there will be in jail.

Misogyny should not be a hate crime, in the same way that racism isn't a hate crime.

Hate is not a crime. You can hate whatever you want to your ugly little heart's content. A hate crime is when you act on that hate in a criminal way.

I believe the term is reserved for serious shit like violence, vandalism, incitment and threats. For instance, illegal discrimination is usually not thought of as a hate crime.

And of course, just being a dick is not a crime. Or 95% of us would be behind bars.

Rather than punishing someone for the motivation, it makes more sense to follow the laws on the books as neutrally and thoroughly as possible. Sentencing a rapist to six months is as bad as sentencing someone who takes a leak in public to a lifetime of shame. Misogyny has nothing to do with it for the most part - it's all about destroying those who are easy targets and letting the rich and influential off easy.

No-one's suggesting that misogyny itself should be a crime, no more than being an arsehole is, otherwise most posters on this board would be locked up. Any UK criminal offence can be a hate crime if it was carried out because of hostility or prejudice based on disability, race, religion, transgender identity or sexual orientation. Misogyny is being added to this list.

Discrimination in the UK (eg refusing a person a job purely because they are gay) is a civil matter, not a criminal offence, and remedies are obtained through civil courts and tribunals.
