Last September I had this coil fitted (had the previous one for 17 yrs, GP said it HAD to go:eek:).

It's been fine, periods have vanished, mood swing don't swing any more but there is a couple of things which have changed and no matter how I google it it doesn't seem to give me the answers I am looking for.

1) My sex drive has almost vanished. I used have a very high sex drive and there was a part of my mind always thinking sexual thoughts. Both aspects have sort of dropped off.

2) I used to get wet, very wet. I was always wet, no foreplay required, I was ready all the time. Now it's like the Sahara in comparison.

Does anyone know if this is due to this particular coil, or do I have to think the unthinkable and consider it could be my age.

I am only 43 I don't want it to be my age.

I miss the sex drive, the neediness of the sexual thoughts and the wetness.

I have even started weekly menu planning as a part of the compensation for the loss....

Help.

Please?

Since the Mirena has low-dose hormones in it, I'm going to guess it's most likely the culprit here. To a large degree, anyhow.

Thank you BB that makes me feel better.

I did try and ask the GP but she didn't seem to understand how I could miss a high sex drive

You're welcome! The answer is NEVER "You're getting old," no matter what the question is. ;) Also, your GP is a moron if she doesn't understand that!

I think it is probably much more likely to be the coil then your age.

I have a friend who recently got the Mirena coil and she had the same complaints your having. Unlike you however, she never became very wet prior to getting the coil and so she says that now, without a lubricant, sex varies from uncomfortable to painful. Her sex drive also fell drastically and she really has to 'work' to get anywhere near the desire level she used to have.

When she began to investigate the problems she was having, she found the internet is littered with women with very similiar complaints and Mirena's site even admits in it's faq's that some possible side affects are 'pain during intercourse' and 'decreased sex drive' (though they claim this affects less than 5% of Mirena users )

So, while I am not sure as to the exact reasons as to why it affects some women this way, I think it is pretty safe to say it has nothing to do with your age.

Thank you.

I did wonder.

I miss the being 'instantly ready.'' Have always hated foreplay (really really hated it), now it's all a bit off putting as I need it to get wet.

Ho Hum. Perhaps it will improve.

I knew I should have kept my old coil, it was doing a great job no problem

Given the history and how it began occurring right after you got the Mirena, it probably is the Mirena. I have one and I don't have those problems, but hormones never produce the same effect in everyone.

It may make you feel better to know that the dose of hormone released by the Mirena decreases to a very minimal dose within a year or so. It could be that (if you choose to stick it out) these problems will go away :)

Huh, yeah, I guess if you went from birth control with NO hormones to the Mirena, it certainly could do that.

I had the opposite experience. I started on birth control pills at 20 and sought out increasingly lower-dose versions of the pill, then the Nuva Ring, then finally the Mirena over the years, and my sex drive has increased back toward my baseline with each hormonal dosage downgrade.

I'm now, at 33, back to my adolescent sex drive (HIGH) and have an equal lubrication level to what you're talking about (WET). So the Mirena has been AWESOME for me. But I guess it all depends where you're starting from.

There are other IUDs without any hormonal component at all. Might you consider talking to your doctor about one of those?

You're welcome and ya I would think alot of women would wonder... well unless they are apparantly like your GP  Her doctor has been pretty sympathetic to her complaints but that could have to do with his being a man lol.

Anyway, even if you did like it, there is indeed a big difference between wanting foreplay and needing it. So I would imagine that is especially annoying.

She has taken the ho hum route for now as well. Going to ride it out for a while and see if her body adjusts, which her doctor says is quite possible.

I got fitted with Mirena right after turning 30 in January 2011. Primary reason is massively heavy and irregular periods that I hate. Previous experiences were with NuvaRing (positive then negative experience, used continuously, no week off, no period) and Depo-Provera (positive experience, no period).

I have found virtually no change in my body or psyche since getting the Mirena, except dramatically reduced periods, which are less and less each month. My sex drive is still insanely high (turns out "women's sexual peak is 30" may be true!) and I have no problem with wetness - if anything, it has increased, though I mostly attribute that to the insane sex drive.

My cramps are a little different though. I used to not get cramps until the period started, and then they were moderately painful for several minutes at a time, several times a day. Now they are intensely painful for 1-2 seconds, come before the period starts, and only happen once or twice over the whole period. I attribute the additional pain to the "oh hi, there is a plastic thing in my uterus" addition.

I absolutely love the Mirena. I wish it was a 12-year thing like the ParaGard, but that one increases your periods (hello copper!) so I wasn't going to touch it. I do have increased hair and acne with the Mirena, but I had that with the NuvaRing and Depo too, so it's just how my body handles those hormones. The only time I didn't have that is when I had no "birth control" at all. But then I had crazy periods and horrible PMS etc. For me, it's a good trade.

That said...if you don't like it, change it. Go back to ParaGard IUD (I assume that's what you had before) or try a different method. What made you switch from the other type to Mirena?
