Is it alright to post pics that I didn't create but did alter significantly in Photoshop here?

Hello and welcome!!

I come from an art forum where the rules indicate that one can only post original works or if it is a manip then it can be posted only if the original artist agrees to it.

If you use "stock images" then you may post but you must supply credit to where and who's stock you used as a part of your work.

Sorry, I can't answer about this board we are rather new and don't have a formal set of guidelines. But I believe that the above sounds fair enough to apply here as well.

Again, Welcome :rose:

That has been my experience on other forums.

Welcome to our little area. ;)

I would have to say that if you're creating entirely new pieces of work from photos or art that someone else has already created, such as creating a drawing/painting from a photo, then the photo was reference material and should be referenced depending on how exactly you interpreted it.

Some of my works are from photos that I've happened across and thought they would translate well into new pieces. But I always inject my own twists and my own style to keep them more mine than someone else's. I also never cross over any subject so literally that it remains obviously identifiable as having come from someone esle's work, with one exception. I had a Gunther Blum photo from an old Penthouse issue. I loved it and wanted to redo it in pencil. So I did. But whenever I show it I make sure to point out who the original author of the work was.

What you're asking about is simply manipulating works of others without actually creating something new and original from scratch. I would say that's a definite no-no unless you're going to reference the original photographer or artist with every piece you show, and you definitely cannot put your name on them as being the creator. This also pays the original author the respect of giving them the opprotunity to tell you to cease and desist the activity because, basically, they're not making money off of what you're doing to their works.

Ultimately, the works you're manipulating is their intellectual property no matter what. Be aware that one way or another you can get yourself in trouble without the original author's permission to do what you're asking about.
